Supporting Manchester Urban Diggers Through Action
Evolution Money is committed to making a difference. Our recent volunteer day with Manchester Urban Diggers (MUD) was a great opportunity to roll up our sleeves and support a cause that’s making a real difference in the community.
A group of colleagues spent the day at Platt Fields Market Garden working alongside the MUD team to help maintain and improve their amazing space.

Who Are Manchester Urban Diggers?
MUD is a not-for-profit organisation that turns underused spaces into thriving community gardens. They provide fresh produce, green spaces and opportunities for people to learn new skills and connect with others.
Their work supports refugees and individuals referred by the NHS for mental health support, showing how green spaces can bring people together and make a real difference. They also run community activities like pottery and mosaic classes, farmers markets and BBQ events.

Getting Stuck In
The day started with a tour of the site. For those visiting for the first time, it was a great chance to learn about the history of the project and the wide range of activities MUD offers.
Once the tour was over, it was time to get to work. Our team helped with a range of tasks to get the site back in shape after a busy festive period.
We cleared and reorganised two polytunnels. Furniture and decorations were removed. Composting efforts were expanded and the space was set up ready to welcome future visitors.
A new firepit area was arranged to create a communal space for upcoming events. This will make it easier for people to gather and enjoy the space together.
Volunteer boots were sorted and organised by size, making sure they’re ready for future visitors without the hassle of searching for a matching pair.
Fresh kale was picked from the garden and later enjoyed as part of the volunteer lunch provided by MUD – a perfect example of sustainability in action.

What We Took Away
Volunteering is more than just lending a helping hand. It’s a chance to step away from our usual work, connect with colleagues in a new way and be part of something bigger.
Many of us left with a fresh perspective and a real sense of achievement. Seeing first-hand how small actions can contribute to a larger mission was incredibly rewarding.
James, Compliance Monitoring Officer, shared his thoughts:
“MUD is an interesting and inspiring organisation, benefiting their community in a multitude of ways. That being said, I think the highlight of my day was working with and talking to different people from around the business that I wouldn’t normally work with or talk to.”
Jo, Project Manager, reflected on her experience:
“It was hard work, as I am not used to manual labour these days, but really rewarding. The induction and back story were inspiring and show just how much can be achieved with dedication and passion. The food was fantastic, and I'd definitely be up for another shift—maybe when the weather’s warmer and the plants and veg are coming alive.”

Looking Ahead
We’re proud to support MUD and their ongoing work. Throughout 2025, we’ll be sending regular groups of volunteers to help with their projects and continue making a positive impact.
Each volunteer day will be led by one of our directors or senior managers, showing our leadership’s hands-on commitment to making a meaningful impact in the community.
A big thank you to everyone who took part and to the MUD team for making us feel so welcome. We’re looking forward to returning soon.
