Over the past 5 days, I had the privilege of spending time with my in-laws, who are both in the early stages of dementia. While the experience was mentally exhausting at times, it was equally rewarding. Watching their frustration with confusion reminds me how important it is to be there for them during this stage of life.
I experienced something similar with my own grandparents, but visiting them here and there versus being immersed back into their lives daily is a much different experience. It has given me a deeper understanding of the challenges they face and the support they truly need.
As we help my in-laws prepare to sell their home and move into a retirement apartment at 85 years old, it’s clear that this transition requires not only logistical planning but emotional support. Dementia doesn’t just affect those diagnosed—it affects the entire family. Now, more than ever, they need us to show patience, love, and understanding.
If you have a loved one going through something similar, I encourage you to take the time to be present. Every small gesture of support helps them feel secure, and our collective care can truly make a difference in their lives.

5 个月Thank you for sharing and bringing light onto this dark space in most people's lives. Until you have lived this journey with someone suffering from dementia, it's an unreachable space that people can't possibly comprehend. Seeing the changes and the frustration that comes with decreasing mental capacity is so hard for us as loved ones because there's only so much we can do. You all are in my prayers as you continue to navigate the path ahead.
