Supporting housing association board members
The NHF is committed to supporting housing association board members

Supporting housing association board members

Housing associations do more than provide affordable homes, they strengthen their communities and enable their residents to thrive. Board members play a pivotal role in ensuring that their organisation delivers this social purpose.

?

At the National Housing Federation (NHF) we have been listening and working closely with board members to develop ways that we can best support them in their role and responsibilities, to allow them to tackle business critical issues and develop a network of peers. We have developed a range of resources https://www.housing.org.uk/about-us/member-offers/boards/

?

These include:

EDI Resources

We have a range of resources designed to ensure that our core values of equality, diversity and inclusion are being protected, championed and reflected in Housing association board rooms across the country. We believe that diverse and inclusive workforces, where staff feel empowered to bring their whole selves to work, leads to better governance. It’s also simply the right thing to do.?

To help support housing association boards in this mission, in 2021 we launched a work stream with a group of 20 board members. Together we identified and prioritised key problems the sector faces in creating diverse and inclusive boards, then worked to develop responses to those problems.

As part of our wider efforts supporting the sector to become more equal, diverse and inclusive, we are publishing a range of resources to allow you to take an active lead in embedding these requirements into your practices:

Events

The NHF runs many events throughout the year designed specifically to strengthen board members in their roles, including our annual Board Excellence in Housing conference, which took place in February. We also run networks for Board members and chairs, these sessions are an opportunity for Board members to receive relevant information and updates, share views, network with peers, and engage in discussion and debate on key topics.

Please do check out the listings for all of the events that we run for Board members https://www.housing.org.uk/about-us/member-offers/boards/

Extra Governance Support for Smaller Housing Associations

Our extra governance support for smaller housing associations is available to all members of the National Housing Federation with fewer than 2,000 properties.

Working in partnership with Campbell Tickell, we have created a service that offers bespoke governance advice to smaller housing associations at no additional cost. Campbell Tickell have extensive experience working with smaller housing providers and will provide hugely valuable, expert advice to our smaller members. https://www.housing.org.uk/our-work/governance/extra-governance-support-smaller-housing-associations/?

Huge opportunities to work innovatively and collaboratively across sectors with health, primary care, education trusts, VCFSE, work & skills and corporates within our conurbations, places and communities to improve overall health, well-being, works and skills, leisure trusts, and building community resilience. Some great work being done but the opportunities are significantly greater. With board roles in health, housing, education and care sectors this is an area of particular interest and very passionate to leverage the full potential of collaborative working. We need to do more to break down silo barriers that hamper us.
