Supporting Health Policy Professionals in a Rapidly Changing World

This year, the International Centre for Parliamentary Studies (ICPS) continued its longstanding Health Roundtable series, tackling some of the biggest challenges faced by health policy professionals. As populations age and technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) reshape the way we approach healthcare, the pace of change can feel relentless. Our 2024 roundtables aimed to give public sector leaders the insights, tools, and connections they need to navigate this evolving landscape and address some of the most urgent issues in global health policy.

The topics we explored reflect the fast-moving and complex realities that health professionals grapple with daily. Sessions covered how AI can transform lung cancer detection, the fight for equity in breast cancer care, and the importance of inclusive HIV/AIDS policies. Each discussion brought together a diverse group of participants, including parliamentarians, healthcare leaders, academic experts, and civil servants, fostering the kind of rich, cross-sector dialogue that is essential for tackling these challenges.

A key theme raised across our roundtables was the rise of artificial intelligence. Our assembled experts explored how emerging technologies can help detect diseases earlier, improve outcomes, and ease resource pressures on healthcare systems. These conversations weren’t just about technology, though—they also delved into the policies needed to ensure that these advances are accessible and equitable, so no one gets left behind.

Another session focused on breast cancer care, a deeply human issue that often highlights stark inequalities in access to diagnosis and treatment. Discussions emphasised the need for targeted, personalised approaches to care, particularly for underserved populations. The session brought to light how health professionals can lead the way in closing these gaps while improving outcomes for patients across the board.

In our HIV/AIDS roundtable, the conversation shifted toward integrating health policy with broader social and economic strategies. By addressing gaps in education, prevention, and support services, participants explored how policymakers can create more inclusive frameworks that meet the needs of vulnerable communities.

At their core, these roundtables are about more than sharing knowledge – they’re about empowering public sector professionals to drive meaningful change. By creating spaces for candid discussions, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas, ICPS helps civil servants stay ahead in an ever-changing world.

As we look ahead, our Health Roundtables remain a cornerstone of ICPS’s work, offering opportunities to reflect, learn, and shape the future of health policy together.
