SUPPORTING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS
Last week we were left devastated by the news that that a young woman’s body was found lifeless in Chatswood. A 37 year-old male, who is believed to be her boyfriend, was subsequently involved in a standoff with police while perched on an awning of the 27th level of a high rise building.
After a 12-hour stand-off the man was arrested and questioned, with the media reporting the woman’s death was “likely domestic violence-related.”
The impact of such heart-breaking incidents are far reaching for victims, their families and the community.
Many people associate Domestic Violence with physical abuse. Although, the demon that is Domestic Violence can take many forms. It might be sexual, verbal, social, economic or spiritual abuse.
Victims may remain silent for fear of more violence from the perpetrator. As a community, it is up to us to be advocates for those who do not have the capacity to do so themselves. Our role is to encourage and support people in situations where Domestic Violence prevails.
If you know someone who is a victim of Domestic Violence, don’t turn a blind eye. Listen to them and let them know there is a whole community of support out there for them starting with:
Your Local Police
Most Local Police stations across Australia have a Domestic Violence Liaison Officer (in NSW there are 100 dedicated Officers) who are specially trained to support Victims throughout the legal process. Each DVLO is specially trained to provide dedicated, discrete support around services, information and refuges. Where necessary, the Police will implement a Domestic Violence Order (DVO) for all forms of Domestic Violence; including those other than physical. Many victims may not be aware they can have a DVO issued for verbal abuse. For a list of Police Stations and phone numbers you can visit the NSW Police website.
FACS (Family & Community Services previously known as DOCS)
When children are in a violent environment contact The Department of Community Services who will help you determine the safest place for you and your family to be. FACS will also advise on the steps to take to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children and family.
Your Local Lawyer
In most cases, a victim of Domestic Violence really doesn’t know where to start when it comes to seeking help. In this case, reach out to your local Lawyer. They will be able to quickly and efficiently provide access to immediate assistance. Your local Lawyer will promptly advise on legal rights surrounding property, child support and spousal maintenance. They can act quickly to assist and protect the victim and their children from domestic violence by finding alternative or complimentary solutions.
