????♀? Supporting Diversity and Inclusion at West Midlands Police: Spotlight on BAPA ??
At West Midlands Police, we are committed to fostering a workforce that reflects the diverse communities we serve. A key part of this effort is the Black and Asian Police Association (BAPA), a vital support network established in 1997 following the tragic murder of Stephen Lawrence. Since its creation, BAPA has played a crucial role in empowering ethnic minority officers and staff, ensuring they feel supported, represented, and heard within policing.
BAPA supports ethnic minority officers and staff, providing a platform for their voices within WMP. While focused on Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) communities, BAPA welcomes anyone committed to fostering inclusivity and diversity.
For over two decades, BAPA has supported members' career development and wellbeing through events, CPD opportunities, and open dialogue. By raising important issues, BAPA ensures its members and communities have a voice in shaping policing practices.
BAPA offers personalised support for officers and staff, providing guidance during challenges and hosting events to encourage growth. Its flexible support meets individual needs—whether for mentorship, career progression, or a sense of belonging.
Since BAPA’s founding, WMP has grown significantly in diversity, with greater representation of ethnic minority officers. BAPA has been central to this transformation, supporting members from backgrounds across Africa, the Caribbean, South and East Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and making it one of WMP's most vibrant associations.

Four Pillars of BAPA’s Work
BAPA’s approach to supporting its members and the community is built on four key pillars:
BAPA strengthens ties between WMP and ethnic minority communities by attending events, building trust, and showing the human side of policing—making officers more approachable to those with limited prior interaction.
While BAPA celebrates Black history year-round, Black History Month is a special time for reflection and recognition. On Thursday, November 7th, BAPA will host an event celebrating the contributions of Black officers, staff, and communities, with a focus on education and empowerment. Highlights to come!
BAPA is a catalyst for positive change at WMP, promoting diversity, supporting staff, and challenging inequalities to build a more inclusive force. We are proud of BAPA’s work to empower its members, ensuring that WMP is a place where everyone can thrive.
