Global Rights Defenders started as a blog then podcast in August 2021. It's core mission is to educate broader audiences on human rights issues worldwide.
In November 2022, Global Rights Defenders became a registered Non-profit under the British Columbia Society Act
And in March 2023, Global Rights Defenders embarked on its first project to work alongside refugees at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.
Our First Project
GRD is trying to understand why refugees in Kenya face challenges in going to school, getting a job, accessing healthcare or opening bank accounts.
Kenya is one of the few asylum countries which have policies, laws and frameworks that allow refugees to integrate into society. When asylum countries do not have governance frameworks to integrate refugees, refugees are considered illegal and can be arbitrarily arrested and detained, human trafficked, tortured and so much more.
Although Kenya allows refugees to integrate, there are many barriers to socio-economic inclusion. GRD wants to understand one of these barriers, such as the challenges to acquiring necessary documentation. Without ID & Documentation, refugees cannot access meaningful education or employment opportunities, or basic services such as healthcare or opening a bank account.
GRD will be doing a research project at Kakuma refugee camp to understand this barrier. We will work alongside refugees and include them as equal partners throughout our project cycle. Our goal is to provide evidence-based research to policy makers, advocates, and others who can influence change and improve the conditions for refugees.
This will be our first project in empowering refugees to achieve self-reliance. Self-reliance means that an individual has the ability to provide for themselves and their families in a sustainable manner, and that they do not need to rely on assistance - like humanitarian aid.
Our vision is to become a global organization which advocates for refugee and human rights worldwide. We intend to undertake projects which enable refugees to become self-reliant, and spread awareness on issues which affect refugee communities.
