Supply Chain - Logistics - Transportation - Shipping

They are not the same.

Yes, sometimes these terms are mixed or used interchangeably.

Let's take a look at the differences and similarities.

Differences:

1. Scope: The Supply Chain is the most encompassing term, covering all processes from raw material sourcing, through production, transportation, and on to the customer. Logistics is a subset of the supply chain, focusing on storage, handling, and transportation of goods. Transportation and Shipping are parts of logistics; Transportation refers to the overall movement of goods while Shipping specifically involves the dispatching of products to a designated location.

2. Function: Supply Chain includes all functions from procurement, manufacturing, distribution, and customer service. Logistics focuses on storage, inventory management, and goods movement. Transportation involves choosing cost-effective and efficient means to transport goods while shipping is about getting goods delivered to customers.

3. Influence: The Supply Chain involves strategic decisions like supplier choice, and plant or warehouse locations. Logistics involve more tactical decisions like inventory levels and route planning. Transportation and Shipping decisions like mode and carrier choices or packaging are more operational.

Similarities:

1. Goal: All aim to deliver the right product, at the right time, at the right place, and at the right cost.

2. Interdependence: Success in one of these areas often depends on success in the others. They need to function harmoniously to ensure efficient operations.

3. Customer Satisfaction: Supply Chain, Logistics, Transportation, and Shipping all impact customer satisfaction. Delays or errors at any stage can impact the service level of the customer.

4. Cost Efficiency: All of these contribute to overall cost - inefficiencies or errors in any of them can increase costs and impact the bottom line.

5. Involve External Parties: Each area requires coordination with internal and external parties, suppliers for the Supply Chain; warehousing providers for Logistics, and carriers for Transportation and Shipping.

These distinctions help an organization to better structure and understand its supply chain processes.
