Supply Chain ESG gets a Major Push

Greetings!

Anjali from Newtral here, and I'm thrilled to welcome you to our weekly sustainability newsletter! ??

EU Parliament Takes Decisive Action on Corporate Responsibility

The European Parliament has taken a significant leap forward in promoting sustainable corporate practices by approving the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) on April 24. This groundbreaking directive aims to hold companies accountable for their social and environmental impacts throughout their supply chains.

Under the CSDDD, companies operating within the EU will be required to identify, prevent, and mitigate adverse effects on human rights and the environment across their entire “chain of activities.”

While the directive awaits final approval from the Council of the EU, it represents a major milestone in the EU’s commitment to fostering corporate responsibility and sustainability.

Europe Sets the Pace in Supply Chain Transparency, but Room for Improvement Remains

A recent study by S&P Global Sustainable reveals that European companies are leading the way in publicly disclosing their supplier codes of conduct compared to their global counterparts.

However, the 2023 S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment highlights that only 17.2% of the assessed companies have transparent processes for screening new suppliers for sustainability-related risks, and less than half (44.5%) make their supplier code of conduct publicly available. These findings emphasize the need for continued efforts to enhance supply chain transparency and sustainability practices worldwide.
