Supply Chain and Environmental Crises is make or break for movers

The twin crises of a pandemic and war in Europe has unearthed the sheer unpredictability and volatility awash in this increasingly globalised world. Overnight, supply chains and climate targets have been neglected as nations scramble to secure their imports and guarantee their exports both in goods and energy supplies. Moving companies are caught in the middle of this conundrum. Right now, it is essential that moving conglomerates adapt to this new normal. By ensuring sustainability remains a key part of their business model moving companies will ensure trust from both a Business to Business (B2B) and a Consumer to Business (C2B) perspective remains sacrosanct. By utilising the sustainability tools at their disposal moving companies will benefit both in the short and long term. This goal is an imperative not just from a “doing the right thing” point of view but from an ecological and moral one. Movers today choose who they wish to do business with based on environmental factors, particularly younger up-in-coming generations - future consumers. Businesses are also picky whom they engage with based on their commitment to sustainability in both their mission statements and practices.

To live up to the Darwinian maxim of ‘adapting or dying’ companies must adapt, or they will die. To thrive as a business today companies must embrace the change around them and shift their operations to ensure they act on the awareness of this change. By utilising environmentally sustainable moving materials in the long-term companies are proving their commitment to the collective global net zero goals.

Tangibly there are several ways moving companies can prove their commitment to environmental goals.

Energy

- Turning off unnecessary lights during the moving process in factories, moving vans etc.

- Turning off computers in the moving offices when not in usage

- Phasing out fossil fuel vehicles

Packaging

- By reducing non-reusable packaging such as cardboard boxes, and optimising reusable packing materials such as crates moving companies will ensure waste prevention

- Ensuring all packing materials are 100 per cent recyclable and biodegradable

Transport

- Ensuring all environmentally damaging moving vans are in the process of being phased out

- Replacing traditional gas-powered vehicles with biodiesel

Education

- By engaging with movers on how best to ensure their move is sustainable i.e., on waste prevention

By committing to environmental sustainability goals and objectives moving companies will be better equipped to handle the unpredictable future.
