Challenge:
Laboratory equipment such as tensile-compression machines, hardness testers, and other testing devices are often sourced from different suppliers, operating as isolated, standalone systems with a high dependence on up-to-date software. Minor software updates are generally free, but major updates or software adjustments needed for operating system changes (e.g., from Windows 10 to Windows 11) can cost thousands of euros.
While machines can operate offline without updates, this leads to a) measurement data not being stored in the cloud, and b) reduced support from suppliers due to outdated software, increasing the risk of limited assistance when technical issues arise.
If a machine becomes outdated, the supplier may withdraw support altogether, leaving customers unable to access machine data. In such cases, continued operation may become infeasible, forcing customers to purchase a new machine, even if the old one remains fully functional.

Options for Customers:
Conclusion: Many manufacturers keep customers reliant on their systems, turning this dependence into a revenue stream with limited incentive for change. Customers, however, have options: they can choose the manufacturer’s costly approach or opt for a more flexible, intelligent solution that returns control over their systems and data. The choice is yours.
