Is supplementing a luxury or a necessity?

Is supplementing a luxury or a necessity?

Caution, this is a passionate post....

Recently I was reminded how the “old school” roofers think through a response to a Facebook post concerning the need for contractors to use xactimate.

This reminded me exactly why I do what I do.

I know first hand what the struggles look like for the old school roofer and the trap you can get yourself into. I saw it.

I’m not a first generation contractor, I’ve watched others come up before me. I’m a contractors kid.

This has given me a unique perspective.

I first watched and later recognized the trend by watching my grandfather work. A true “old school” brick mason.

My grandfather was one of the most skilled brick layers I’ve ever seen. I was fortunate, as a kid to watch him work. It was impressive even to a kid. I admired him so much.

I rode around in his truck with him, and eventually when I turned 16 that 87 3/4 ton GMC was my first truck! Yeah I drove it to high school, and I was proud of my grandpas old truck.

My friends all called it the giant green giant.

My relationship with my grandfather was short lived.

See my grandpa did a lot in his life. He fought in a war, raised 9 kids, took care of his wife and worked for years to give them the best life he could.

He sacrificed. Literally worked himself as hard as he could to make it happen.

He was the old school OG brick mason.

He unfortunately got heart disease and died when I was 10 years old. Leaving behind a massive family that misses him dearly.

I don’t blame him for his work ethic, in fact I hope I have some of that drive in me. I’m just doing everything to help people not fall in the old school trap or hopefully get out of it!

If you think supplementing is a luxury that is exists just to pad jobs then you are missing the point.

See you can go around and underbid everyone. Take all the low paying, low profit, customers.

Your work may be great but are you truly making enough to survive?

Every “old school” guy pays the price for their work. Yeah you might make great money, I see it all the time with roofers, you guys are doing low margin jobs but think you’re making enough because you sell more work then anyone else.

I don’t know any old school guys that are working 80 hours a week, with really healthy relationships. These guys normally go through marriages like they do cigarettes and spend their money paying child support for kids they rarely get to see.

We’re not even getting into the health ramifications of this type of work ethic.

I teach what I teach and help clients out of their own way, so that they can have a real business, with real profits, and move into a new sphere of freedom, relationships, and business.

Supplementing is essential to success as a business. It’s how you get paid for the work that you’re already doing. It’s learning how to properly bill your insurance projects.

You might hate it at first, fight it, but everyday you’re not doing it, you will regret. There will come a day you wished you had made this change sooner. I’ve NEVER had a client say, “geez, we could have done without all this extra money for our business...”

I love and miss my grandfather. He was an amazing, old school, trail blazing contractor.

Who would love to spend more time with you?

Is more profit for your business really a luxury? Or is it truly a necessity...

The choice is 100% up to you.
