SUPERvision in Group Format: Why? What? When?

SUPERvision is a professional reflective process designed to enhance the competence of coaches (leaders, mentors, L&D professionals, consultants...) and to ensure we are fit for purpose. SUPERvision has three main functions: normative (exploring ethical challenges and benchmarking), developmental (enabling coaches in improving their practice by discussing, reflecting and resourcing), and supportive (promoting personal well-being and restoration).

Group coaching SUPERvision involves a group of coaches working together with ideally a trained, experienced and accredited SUPERvisor. this safe spaces offers reflection on the doing and being of coaching, exploration of pricing/pitching/promoting and contracting, learning from each other, and feedback as well as support.

Group SUPERvision provides both additional benefits and challenges. All our our MCC Faculty are experienced SUPERvisors with internal and external coaching experience.?As trained and accredited SUPERvisors we hold the space, works systemically, and uses psychodynamics, gestalt, somatic work and other approaches to support pre-flection (reflecting on future, reflection-in-action and reflection (reflection on the past).??

SUPERvision in a Group Format?

Collaboration and co-creation of learning: Group coaching SUPERvision allows coaches to learn from each other and build a small community in a profession that can be lonely for those who run their own businesses. Coaches can share experiences, insights, and challenges, top-tips, gain perspectives and explore styles or approaches from others. This can broaden perspectives, develop new skills through drills and role play, normalise experiences, and improve coaching practice.

Support: Coaches receive objective, constructive feedback and support from their peers and their professional SUPERvisor in group coaching supervision. This can help coaches identify strengths, find development opportunities, enhance coaching skills/knowledge and behaviours, build confidence and ensure self-care.?

Cost-effective: Group format is more cost-effective than individual SUPERvision as coaches can share the cost, which makes it more affordable arguably democratizing this development tool. ??

Ethical practice exploration: Many organisations require coaches to engage in active SUPERvision to gain contracts and accreditation. Coaches often are asked to have their SUPERvisors sign off on active SUPERvision. This should, of course, be declared to coachees and teams being coached. It ensures that the coaches hired have someone to talk through achievements and any arising issues. Participation in a supervision group can satisfy this requirement whilst learning from each other's varying contexts.

Systemic Focus: Our world has many complex issues. Working with a SUPERvisor supports coaches to take a more systemic approach to supporting their clients. The group format ensures 'giving voice' from the system are represented, identifying parallel processes and seeing different perspectives and needs.

Last word...?

Group SUPERvision is an effective way for coaches to enhance their professional practice, debate ethical issues, support each other, challenge assumptions and grow the profession. By stablishing clear ways of working together before and during SUPERvision this can be an empowering and enabling development provision in service of the coach and their clients in turn.
