Superstitions associated with crows

Crows are usually associated as the messenger of Yamraj (the god of death)in Hindu religion. So if a crow bites you or peck his beak on your head or anywhere. It means you 'time' has come. Means you are going to die soon. I don't know why people think that way. So to come over this bad omen you have to tell any other person to call any person who is close to you. And tell them you are dead then they will cry or faint whatever they do. After they are done you can tell the other person to tell them that you are alive it is just that a crow pecked your head. Then according to Hindu law you are saved.

I've personally never believed in superstition. I've mocked people that believed in such silly things. One day, for the first time in my life, I've seen crows and I was on a bus at that time returning from college where the teacher has just taught about heart attacks that particular day. The bus stopped due to traffic and suddenly some crows came nearby the bus window. The very next day, someone in my family died with heart attack. Sometimes I believe that there's something out there trying to warn you, we just miss and fail to recognize them and that's coming from a very sceptical and scientific person like me. It was a new experience, a new perspective to how to view and understand life.

Seeing a single crow is considered to be very unlucky. Seeing two crows means good luck! If you see three black crows together that means someone in your family will die. Seeing four crows is a sign of financial gain. Seeing five crows means sickness will afflict you or someone close to you, and seeing six crows means death! People believe this superstition because they eat dead animals and flocks or groups of crows are known as " A Murder plan"

Like all other birds of our planet, crow is also a voiceless and harmless bird doing scavenging free of cost. By rescuing a fallen crow, you have proved that you are a wonderful and kind-hearted human being. The people who called crow as Shudra are Shudras of the highest order. By rescuing the said crow, you have earned the goodwill and blessings of Shani Maharaj, because, we Hindus believe that, crow is the vehicle of Shani Maharaj. An ounce of practice is better than tons of preaching.

Mostly because they are a "carrion bird", eating dead stuff, and picking at dying animals and such, plus they are horrible for eating newly sown crops, and wrecking farm fields. Anyplace there is something dead, along with vultures, you will find crows. My cousin says they "work for the state", as they are always to be found cleaning up road kill. Cultural superstitions often focus on black animals (as if they embodied the frightening dark), and crows are black, pretty clever, and easily observed. It's also the case that birds in general have been used as the basis for many superstitions over the ages,

I'm guessing because of their seeming free agency -- they come, they go. The bigger question is why people feel the need for superstitious beliefs, meaning they feel more comfortable ascribing causation to co-occurring events than accepting with the idea that they don't know what makes things tick, or even if there is something that makes things tick. Myself, I think people cling to superstitions to give themselves a false notion of control or understanding. To say and truly mean "I don't know" is the road away from superstition and toward science.

I fell it is just a mindset...I like crows they always look confident, and always staring at something which I feel is like me...When I see a crow I feel that I am going to win over something...I feel crow knows something about future...Crows are normally fed first in the morning from the first rice pot as an offering to the ancestors and to planet Saturn, who is regarded as the son of the celestial Sun. Crows also are expected to know of the arrival of unexpected pleasant guests to the house. When a crow perches itself on a branch towards a home and is continuously crowing, it is said to bring good news of arrival of guests or mail!

Now crows are also important for prayers to the deceased. When there is death, rice balls with sesame seeds are offered to the departed and fed to the crows or the fish (where crows are not available). All of the above is to maintain a balance in the eco system. Crows which are carrion birds do a cleansing job of dead and rubbish. Of course they also do contribute to the rubbish being strewn all over but generally are considered friend of the public sweeper. Moreover being black they would be shunned and ignored and by attaching it's importance to a feared planet and the ancestors crows have a prime position in the homes of Hindus.

Ravens and crows have been identified as those who live in forlorn buildings and hence represent ghoulish and ghastly images in the West. Nevertheless ravens are considered lucky for the monarchy in the UK. Also Christianity has had a great deal to do with the damnation of crows(raven) and wolves, when they started to Christianize Northern Europe they had to convince the pagan people that their main god Odin (Wodan) was evil, he had two raven and two wolves hence the conclusion crows/raven and wolves are evil bringers.

Crows know that; 1) cemeteries are usually fenced off so very few ground predators are lurking about (very few dogs/cats/wolves/bears/etc), 2) humans do not generally go there after dark so they will be undisturbed in their sleep, 3) cemeteries are usually within city-limits, which also means people will not shoot them, because gun fire is illegal within city limits, 4) enough bugs/worms crawling out of the grounds for them to feast on, 5) they feel safe there….It isn’t because they are trying to eat any dead human bodies.

As a matter of fact, if they decide they like you enough, they will actually make sure that you were safe while you're out, they will retrieve things that you've lost and have them back at your house before you realize you've lost them and will protect your smaller yard pets from large predators. Wild crows and ravens are very good with small children. Small children that eat outside and drop food generally become very good friends to the crows and those crows will protect that child as they grow and learn.

On the other hand, if you're mean to a crow, they will retaliate and they mean it. Crows live in spots for centuries. Obviously not the same bird but, the same family. Crows teach their young. If you make a great-great-great-grandfather crow angry, his generational offspring will come to retaliate. I take the smaller eggs from our little hens and boil them for the crows twice a week and feed them raw peanuts. They keep the red-tailed Hawks from snatching our baby chicks. It’s not an omen of anything. People who allow their lives to be guided by “omens” and “predictions” are doomed to lose a lot of money to charlatans and frauds who are happy to prey on their weak-mindedness. Cheers!

Anant / m / 44. There are two crows everyday on the window of my dinning room. I give them whatever I have. They eat chips or chapati directly from my hand. But now-a-days one crow bites me every day. It doesn't pecks it bites. Now I let him bite me as I am used to. After reading this article I am very happy to know my time has come. I will prepare accordingly.

I don't believe in that

It is said that in shradh paksh we should give first food to crow which will reach to our ancestors. In shardh paksh we used to make all food items early in the morning and first give to crow.

The crowd come everyday. I never count their numbers. And they won’t leave until they are given food. So I consider it a blessing to feed birds and never notice the numbers.

Good information on Crows, Kishore. They are the most intelligent birds who can understand human body language much faster and they remember the person who feeds them for a long time.
