Superstition

Superstition

Tomorrow is Friday 13th -

A superstitious day for some.

This got me thinking...

If something goes wrong on Friday 13th, people will often blame it on the unlucky date.

Some may even wake up tomorrow morning and think,

Oh, Friday 13th… what’s going to go wrong today…

In fact, many of us have that thought even when it’s not Friday 13th!

When we’re not feeling great, we’re even more likely to spend time thinking about all the things that could go wrong.

The thing is - then it becomes a vicious cycle.

Thinking about the negative things makes us feel rubbish - and feeling rubbish makes us think more about negative things.

So why not flip the switch?

Instead of thinking about what could go wrong - think about what could go right!

Extra points if you’re completely outlandish about the positive possibilities!

If you’re running late for the bus, instead of thinking, I’ll probably miss it and be late for work and then I’ll be in trouble…

Why not change that to the bus will probably get stuck in traffic and I’ll still make it…

Or even: the bus will be delayed so I’ll arrive at the stop right on time - but then the traffic will magically clear and I’ll be early to work!

Because why not?

What do you have to lose by expecting something great to happen?

Well, actually it turns out that what you have to lose is a bad mood and a negative outlook.

This can be a fun game to play with children - thinking of the most ridiculous positive outcome.

It’s also fun to play just on your own; you can improve your mood on a dreary morning by imagining great things happening.

Give it a go - and don’t forget to let me know how you get on!
