The future of urban living will require large scale technology investments from the edge to the cloud. New technologies of cloud, 5G, artificial intelligence, automation, digital health, and the internet of things are needed to scale citizen services for a diverse and growing population. Smart cities, transportation and public services integrating humans and machines with the physical, digital and biological worlds are needed to create livable and governable Digital Cities of Tomorrow.

What is Intelligent Infrastructure and Why Do We Need It?

A great conversation between two thinkers deeply immersed in the journey to intelligent infrastructure.

Cities and States face increased environmental, social and governance pressure from their citizens. And to respond, cities executives need to move away from pure digitalization of infrastructure embedded in the concept of Smart Cities to an "intelligent infrastructure".

And in this process they will have more responsibility - for instance, they would have to strike a balance between the needs of their citizen and their privacy and security, they will have to enable equitable access, and they would have to build a standardized infrastructure and "system of systems" to manage those infrastructure together, and do that with the support of State governments to benefit from the economies of scale, and enable the use and reuse of those applications across cities and states.

I would say that this is the best time from a technology perspective...every day its something new! My role at Supermicro is fantastic because one hour I'm working on Smart Cities and Smart Spaces, and AI infrastructure, and the next hour I'm working on autonomous vehicles, and the next minute I'm working on AI in the retail space.

It's such an amazing time period we're living in, with the technology just starting to increase. I would say, five years ago, maybe 2014 to 2020 there was a doldrum in some of the technology, but now I would say we're in catch up mode and we're doing a great job. It's a great time to be working in this industry!

City and state infrastructure planners need to look at a range of requirements before choosing vendors. This is not just about lower power consumption today.
