Superheroes Overcoming Their Demons!
I like when superheroes at times have to battle their inner demons. One example is Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2. When everything is going wrong for Peter Parker, losing his powers, his love interest is marrying someone else, and he blames himself for his Uncle’s death, he forgets who he is and falls to his demons. Then finally, he wakes up and realizes who he is after Aunt May gives him a pep talk and the motivation to make the ultimate comeback. Thus, he overcomes his demons who are holding him back. That comeback can be seen in the two links below:
The next example of a superhero battling their inner demons is Bruce Wayne in the Dark Knight Rises. In this film we see Bruce Wayne struggling to live his life with the loss of his parents and his love interest Rachel. The only way to deal with this pain is to become Batman once more and take on the new threat to Gotham, Bane. Knowing his injury status, Bruce Wayne at first succumbs to his demons by hoping to die while taking on Bane. After losing to his adversary, Bruce Wayne finds himself beaten and locked in a prison. The only way out of the prison is to climb out of it through the entrance of a pit. Once Bruce recovers from his injuries, he tries to climb out only to fail not only once but two times. After both times he forgets who he once was, the Batman. However, after knowing full well that his city can be destroyed and a prison doctor gives him a pep talk about allowing the fear of death to come back into his life to give him that fighting spirit again, Bruce Wayne makes the third attempt and escapes the pit. The climb has stages. When he was first climbing the third time, he still is not sure who he is. Then in the next stage he makes it to the platform to look up at the opening out. Still does not know who he is. Finally, as he is walking over to the edge of the platform to make a jump to another platform to escape, an army of bats fly past him resurrecting his spirit into becoming the Batman once again. Thus, escaping his demons once and for all and putting an end to the threat of Gotham packaged in the leadership of Bane and the mysterious villain, Talia Al Ghul. In addition to Spider-Man and Batman overcoming their demons, another great example is Rocky Balboa. In Rocky 3, Rocky is a fighter who ran into a solid brick wall. First, he accepts a challenge from a monster fighter known as Clubber Lang, thinking that Lang is just like any normal fighter which we know is not the case. Then, before the fight with Lang, Rocky loses his manger Mickey which throws his confidence right out the window. Finally, Rocky loses in a tremendous loss to Lang. As Rocky lies there motionless being counted out, his demons are flying all around him, not giving him a chance to breath. After all these losses, Rocky forgot who he is which is a person that can persevere. To help him regain who he is, his former opponent, Apollo Creed, offers to train him to get back into the game. Even though Apollo tries very hard to train Rocky, Rocky keeps succumbing to his demons that he is a horrible fighter and should not have held onto the title as long as he did. Because of this, Apollo just about gives up on Rocky. To help Rocky finally overcome his demons, his wife Adrian snaps him out of it that it is alright to be afraid but do not let it defeat you. From there, Rocky trains better and realizes once again who he is, a person that can persevere anything. Thus, after defeating Clubber Lang, Rocky destroys the demons that were swarming around him. See Rocky defeat Lang below:
Finally, the last superhero I will talk about forgetting who he is and then overcoming his demons is Thor. Because there are so many changes to Thor, I will only focus on him in Avengers Infinity Wars. When Thor enters this movie, he lost his world of Asgard only to have his ship attacked by Thanos. After Thanos dumps Thor into Space, Thor is now facing his demons. First, he realizes his powers are weak against Thanos. As a result, he succumbs to his demons that he is not as powerful as he used to be. However, this puts him on a journey with Rocket Raccoon and Groot to create a new weapon to destroy Thanos, Stormbreaker. After putting himself through incredible torture that almost took his life, Thor managed to create Stormbreaker and regain his power. However, still battling his demons, Thor arrives in Wakanda with Rocket Racoon and Groot to assist the Avengers who were under a heavy attack from Thanos’ monster army. Thor’s assistance proves to be beyond valuable as he throws Strombreaker through multiple creatures of Thanos’ army. As a result, Thanos’ army is shocked as Thor overcomes his demons of losing his power and informs his enemy “BRING ME THANOS.” See Thor’s triumphant return in the link below.
