Superhero Spotlight 97: Amanda Silcoff
Q: Let’s take it back to the beginning: Can you tell us the story of your business’s first month?
A: Armed with a degree in Music Theatre Performance and extensive stage experience, I launched my career by starting a vocal coaching business, Amanda Silcoff Voice. One year later, I co-founded Spotlight Academy with an even bigger vision: creating a nurturing space where performers could develop their musical theatre talents. I wanted to build an experience that fostered teamwork, confidence, and creative expression. The first month was thrilling—from welcoming our first clients to finalizing our branding and carefully setting up our studio space. Though the to-do lists seemed endless, the work was exhilarating. Building something from scratch brought an indescribable energy. I found myself working longer hours than ever before, yet feeling more fulfilled than ever. What kept me going was seeing each day as an opportunity to learn and grow. Like many successful business owners, I've found that challenges became integral parts of my entrepreneurial story. Looking back at the beginning of my Spotlight journey, I was driven by an unrelenting desire to succeed and become my best self. Through this process, I've discovered what it means to be a leader for both my staff and students, ultimately finding my superpower: seeing the "yes" in any situation.
Q: Was there a time when a person or experience changed your life and your perspective on it?
A: After graduating university, I was eager to network and gain new experiences. I joined SoulCycle's administrative team—a decision that became pivotal in my entrepreneurial journey. While cleaning bikes and bathrooms wasn't my ultimate calling, being part of such a well-run organization provided invaluable insights into business management. I witnessed firsthand how a premium fitness brand maintained its high standards through exceptional customer service, meticulous attention to detail, and consistent brand messaging. Their approach to staff training, client relationships, and community building became the blueprint for Spotlight Academy. Each shift taught me something new about operations, from scheduling systems to creating a welcoming studio environment. I discovered that success extends beyond the core service—it's about crafting an experience that makes clients feel valued and part of something special. These lessons have been instrumental in shaping how I run Spotlight Academy, where we aim to be more than just a teaching facility—we're a supportive community for young performers.
Q: What is your biggest challenge right now, and what drives you to keep going?
A: My biggest ongoing challenge is navigating brand expansion in a creative setting. As we grow, we must establish and adapt protocols while maintaining our quality standards. The key challenge is balancing necessary structure with creative freedom for our team members. I'm constantly discovering new ways to support team growth while ensuring smooth operations—whether through clearer communication channels, stronger feedback systems, or professional development opportunities. What keeps me going is seeing how these efforts positively impact both our team members and students. When I see instructors bringing their full potential to classes or beaming with pride at their students' achievements, it confirms that our careful approach to people management is worthwhile. The joy of leading a team that shares our vision for excellence in performing arts education makes every challenge meaningful.
I'm thrilled to share that I recently completed my Master's in Music Business from Berklee College of Music. This journey was particularly challenging as I balanced my studies while running both Spotlight Academy and Amanda Silcoff Voice. Managing coursework alongside two growing companies required careful time management and dedication, but the knowledge gained has already proven invaluable in enhancing our operations and expanding our educational offerings. This achievement represents not just personal growth, but also brings additional expertise to benefit the future of my companies.
