FUNDING POINT – SUPERCROWD 2024 RECAP
The annual SuperCrowd 2024 online event ended yesterday with closing remarks of its creator and emcee – Devin Thorpe. Job well done. This event featured the who’s who and key actors in the world of United States investment crowdfunding. I was privileged to play a part in my presentation yesterday on Customer-Focused Crowdfunding.
?Investment crowdfunding, as a means of enabling small businesses to access capital, has been growing faster since the Jobs Act was enacted in 2012 and approved by the SEC in 2016. In short, this major makeover of federal law (that was mimicked by most of the states) gave non-wealthy people the opportunity to invest in the businesses they know and shop at on Main Streets across the United States. Yes, the law is still flawed in that it has too many stupid, illogical constraints on investing that reflect the bias of the SEC and powers that be within the capital industry. However, you play the cards you are dealt.
?I often state that a small business seeking to raise funding is invisible to almost everyone. An investor candidate cannot invest in a business that they do not know exists. Comments from the participants in SuperCrowd 2024 echoed that most people do not know about investment crowdfunding. Conversations with community leaders, bankers, government programs, and economic development people who are working to get capital for small businesses commonly do not know about investment crowdfunding.
?In addition, as I have previously published in a paper, $298 Billion Short of Potential , nearly all of the people who now have the freedom to invest in a local business also do not know about investment crowdfunding and do not consider themselves investors. As a result, small businesses find raising funding from their friends, neighbors, and customers through investment crowdfunding complex and difficult.
?To be successful in raising capital through crowdfunding, a small business has to raise a large amount of money in small amounts from a large number of people. Commonly, a minimum investment in a small business through investment crowdfunding starts at $100. This amount is affordable to nearly everyone out of savings or their household budget. However, it takes very many people making investments at this dollar amount to be substantial. To raise $100,000 requires 1,000 investors and to raise $1 million requires 10,000 investors. This number exceeds the number of people with whom a small business has a relationship and is larger than many small communities.
?Commonly, small businesses are not trained to build relationships that represent communities to whom they can turn for funding when they need it. Building communities takes time. Commonly, small businesses do not have the infrastructure in place to manage a larger number of relationships. More time and money.
?Many organizations in different parts of the country are working to build these communities as investor candidates upon whom local small businesses may call to raise funding. These organization are mostly hyper local in their focus to improve the economy of a small geographic neighborhood where virtually everyone benefits from the impact of the success of the small business through jobs, local purchases, payment of taxes, and support of local projects and associations. This approach works, but like that of the small business, it takes time to assemble and implement.
?The collective wisdom of experts in investment crowdfunding is growing. Events like SuperCrowd 2024 enable the sharing of this knowledge. While presenting my breakout session, I wanted to see what knowledge was being shared in the other concurrent sessions. As a participant in SuperCrowd 2024, I get access to the recordings of these sessions. So, I will get a chance to take a couple of days to geek out on these presentations.
?While small businesses and local organizations are building their communities, SuperCrowd 2024 gave me an opportunity to build my community of people who share my interest in supporting small businesses in raising funding. I have already scheduled a number of calls to talk with other people who are out there doing something somewhere and learning more about how to better implement investment crowdfunding for my clients.
?SuperCrowd Chicago will be held on June 12th in Chicago. It represents the next opportunity for Devin to work his magic and for people to come together to learn about and advance investment crowdfunding for local communities, individuals, and small businesses.

CAMP WAPIYAPI AND COLFAX MARATHON
?I will be participating in the shortest part of the Colfax Marathon on May 18th – the 5K (run, jog, walk, enjoy being outdoors) to raise money for Camp Wapiyapi – an outdoor camp for kids with pediatric cancer that will hold camping sessions in late June (male volunteers are still needed as camper companions).
?If you are interested in also raising money through this fun event, there is still time to register and sign up to support Camp Wapiyapi.
?Party Gets Started With the Colfax 5K
?Thousands will gather on Saturday, May 18th for a 5K to kickoff Denver's largest running weekend that includes a well-organized course, dogs, and race shirt.

?The finish line has food and DJ Sinna-G (on-air radio personality from 100.3 FM) to keep the party going!
?The party starts in Denver's City Park at the same spot as Sunday's Marathon. Run a PR or walk it with friends and oh yeah, dogs are invited! They will have a blast with their own bandana and hundreds of their friends!
