Super Simple tips to Stop the Scroll on LinkedIn

Super Simple tips to Stop the Scroll on LinkedIn

First step in this process. Go to the homepage of LinkedIn and scroll through it. Notice what catches your eye.

Observe what makes you stop and what you scroll past. See what content makes you read an entire 1500 to 3000 character post and what simply doesn't.

Because here's the thing. It doesn't matter what time you post at and or what day. It doesn't matter if you posted it straight to the platform or used a scheduler.

There are two things that make a difference:

  1. High quality, and true to life photos of you will gain attention.
  2. A hook (for example, a confession, something that surprises and fascinates people.)

In the world of Business to Business Marketing, we work with people. Over the twenty years in my career in advertising, in pitch after pitch, people made the difference of one agency being selected over another.

Sure price comes into it, but that's negotiable. Ideas are important. But when you want to work with an accountant, or a solicitor, a graphic designer, a coach, a therapist, a gardener. Talent and knowledge are important but you also have to trust and like that person.

And so if you want people to engage with your posts on LinkedIn, it all comes back to being recognisable, which then comes back to the photo.

Are you using enough imagery of the people in your business in your posts?

Think about it. Big brands spend millions on creating a brand essence, of using people in their ads to create that likeability. So are you using the humans (that's you!) in your business to promote it enough?

If you're not, it's time to get that smartphone out, clean the lens and start taking some photos of you. Hire a professional photographer and get images that you can post easily on LinkedIn.

It's not just about the headshot for the LinkedIn Profile Photo. Think about the photos of you at work, relaxing, in the office, on your days off. People want to get an idea of what goes on behind the scenes. They want to understand what you're like to work with. Are you sharing enough of that content that helps them understand what you and your company stands for?

Are you sharing enough of your personal experiences in your posts?

It doesn't have to be tragic, or painful. It could be a lesson that you've learned. Or a problem that you helped your client avoid. Have you saved a client thousands of pounds by helping them to avoid a fine or a fee? Have you helped your client to win business? Have you made silly mistakes that now you don't make anymore and it's changed your business?

Some of the best performing posts that I have shared, either have something to do with my family life or confessions of mistakes that I've made on my journey from when I started my business to now.

They do well because other business owners want to avoid the mistakes but also because sharing moments of vulnerability helps you become more relatable.

Great advice that I once received from Copy Coach Marisa Corcoran is "Share the scar not the open wound." So don't share stories that trigger emotional trauma or pain for you, share what you've learned from and it's far enough into the past that it doesn't bother you anymore.

One more tip:

If you want to generate quality leads on LinkedIn by creating content that converts, avoid using engagement pods.

They don't work. Yes you might end up with lots of engagement. But from who? Not your ideal clients.

If you're on LinkedIn to grow your professional network, to grow a sense of community with other like-minded business people, then there's no point in being in a group that's sole objective is liking posts.

If you want to learn how to create content that converts and join a growing community of businesses that will cheer you on (but not in a pod way!)

Then think about signing up to a content membership or a coaching group where you'll learn skills that you can use to promote your business. It will help grow your confidence as you become more visible.
