This super full moon will be amazing!

This super full moon will be amazing!

On January 20th until shortly after midnight on January 21st, the “Super Blood Wolf Full Moon” returns!

It all starts with a “lunar eclipse”. Which happens when the moon passes fully into the Earth's shadow.

A total lunar eclipse results from the moon and the sun being on opposite sides of the Earth. When that happens, the Earth blocks the sunlight that typically reaches the moons surface. Instead, the Earth’s shadow falls upon it.

It all begins at 9:36pm eastern time on January 20th. Assuming sky conditions are good, viewing across North America should be ideal.

Around 9:36pm, the moon starts to enter the Earth’s shadow, known as the Umbra.

By 11:41pm, the full eclipse begins and finishes around 12:43am on January 21st.

Adding to the spectacle, this will also be a super moon!

A super moon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to the Earth in its orbit. A phenomenon called perigee!

This process makes the moon look bigger and brighter. In fact, it will appear almost 30% larger.

As if that wasn't enough, the moon will appear red in color, something affectionately known as a “blood moon”.

A blood moon occurs when our eyes pick up on the red colors of the visible light spectrum.

To make things even more remarkable, the Native Americans called this moon the “wolf moon”, inspired by the incessant howling of hungry wolves outside the village as they struggled to satisfy their hunger pains.

I had an awesome time watching and trying to capture with my camera the various stages! I was disappointed my cell phone could not capture the reddish hue. The other thing that was amazing to watch was its ascent the later it got and how tiny the moon became in the sky as its total eclipse neared.
