THE SUPER BOWL STORY

THE SUPER BOWL STORY

Watching the Super Bowl this year had a clear message to me: DEI is here to stay. With an American government taking aim at DEI in business, it is clear through some Super Bowl ads that DEI is here to stay. Ads such as Tubi’s Skin Cowboy and Nike’s So Win show that DEI is still a good business practice that drives consumers to brands and companies. While Donald Trump may think he can control how businesses implement their strategy, we the people do not agree with his message.?

And that message extends beyond the ads shown during the game, the halftime performance by Kendrick Lamar was a celebration of Black culture while offering a stark criticism of America. Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance was not for his fans, it was a message to Americans that should not be taken lightly. From having Samuel L Jackson as Uncle Sam “critiquing” the performance to having dancers in prison uniforms create the American Flag, Kendrick is a master of storytelling and messaging.

Each one of his songs, from Humble with a split American flag to bringing out SZA for Luther and All the Stars, gave fans moments to appreciate Kendrick’s discography while building upon his message. That message being clear: America is divided, and it's not ending soon.

Let’s set one thing straight: “Not Like Us” is not just a song about Drake. Kendrick teases the song by saying “40 acres and a mule this is bigger than the music”, a reference to proposed reparations to slaves that were freed. This line builds upon the end verse of Not Like Us, talking about the history of Atlanta’s economy because of slavery and Drake being a colonizer of American Rap Culture.???

The song has transformed from a diss track against Drake to an Anthem that calls out the power dynamics of the new American Government. While some may say the revolution will not be televised, some parts will be part of the most watched event of the year in the United States. And that in itself is the revolution.?
