Sunscreen & plasma concentration
A single subject this week as this is a critical one:
FDA asked sunscreen manufacturers to study its safety. They didn't do it, so FDA did it. It turns out some sunscreen ingredients are systemically absorbed.
The 1st study was published in May 2019 in JAMA Current and drew massive attention and controversy in the scientific and the lay press (see my Newsletters dated May 9th and 16th, 2019).
The 2nd study has been published on Jan 21st 2020 and is going to stir up more controversy. This study does NOT show that sunscreen is unsafe. However, you will see a lot of misinformation in the lay press in the next few days and weeks.
This study is different in two main ways:
1) The investigators wanted to know the plasma concentration of sunscreen after just ONE application.
2) The investigators wanted to know how long chemical sunscreen stayed in the blood in the weeks after maximal application.
Here a thread from Dr Ade Adamson which is telling you all about the 2nd study.
