In 1839, French physicist Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect, where light is converted into electrical energy and 1954, Bell Labs develops the first commercial solar panel, with an efficiency of 4%. Then in 1958, Vanguard 1, the first solar-powered satellite, was launched into orbit, heralding a new era in space exploration and sustainable energy. The advent of solar power in space marked a pivotal moment in the history of renewable energy. As the space race intensified, NASA and other space agencies invested heavily in solar research and development. The need for reliable, long-lasting power sources in space drove innovation, leading to significant advancements in solar panel efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness.

The success of solar power in space soon translated to terrestrial applications. In the 1960s and 1970s, solar panels began to appear on Earth, powering remote research stations, villages, and homes. The 1970s oil embargo further accelerated the development of solar energy, as governments and industries sought alternative energy sources. This growth is expected to continue, with the International Energy Agency projecting that solar PV will account for 4.5% of total global electricity generation.

However, the widespread adoption of solar energy is not without its challenges. One of the main obstacles is the need for grid infrastructure to accommodate intermittent solar power generation. As more solar panels are installed, grid operators must ensure that the supply and demand of electricity are balanced. This requires investments in smart grids and energy storage solutions. Another challenge is the potential for land use conflicts, particularly in areas with limited space. Also, establish global standards and certifications for solar products and installations to ensure quality and safety. We must also continue to create innovative business models that make solar energy more accessible, affordable, and appealing to a wider audience. While giving public awareness and education its prime place, by promoting the benefits of solar energy, address misconceptions, and educate consumers about solar adoption.
