Sunglass Labels: Understanding the Information Provided for Your Safety and Comfort
Sunglass labels are essential to knowing the purpose and quality of any pair of sunglasses. The label provides information about the lens, frame, UV protection rating and other important factors that determine the best use for a given pair of sunglasses.
When you get a new pair of sunglasses, it's important to take the time to read the labels carefully. Not only will this help you make better use of your sunglasses, but it will also provide important information and care instructions that are essential to keep your sunglasses in good condition. I'll introduce the labelling of sunglasses for you in the following paragraphs.
Categories of Filter and Labels
There is a table named Table 1 of filter categories and assigned symbols for sunglasses.
Information and Labelling
To ensure user safety, manufacturers must provide basic information about each pair of sunglasses. This data should be visible on the frame or via labels, packaging and other documentation that came with your sunglasses purchase.
Information to be supplied
The information that you can find on either eyeframes, labels or packups should be contained with the following items:
- Identification of model.
- Name and address of the manufacturer.
- Quality certificate.
- Type of filter, whether it's photochromic or polarizing.
- Number of filter categories. If it is photochromic filters, it should include faded and darkened states.
- Description of the symbol given on Table 1. The minimum height of a symbol should be 5 mm.
- Prohibited scenarios which need to be included at least:
- not to directly observe sunlight;
- not suitable for protection against artificial light sources, e.g. solaria;
- not for use as eye protection against mechanical shock hazards (for products not meeting the requirements of 7.3 or 7.6);
- any other limitations deemed appropriate by the manufacturer, e.g. increased or decreased transmittance of photochromic glasses due to high or low temperaturesor to low light conditions.
- If it is the category 4 of filters on Table 1, it should be marked as 'not suitable for driving and road use'. The symbol's height should not be less than 5mm. The symbol is shown below.
- When the light transmittance of the filter is lower than 75% and higher than 8%, a warning of 'not suitable for driving at dusk or at night' or 'not suitable for driving at night or under dark light conditions' should be given. The same applies to photochromic filters with transmittance below 75% in faded conditions.
- Instructions for caring for and cleaning sunglasses, a list of sunglasses and damaged products that are not suitable for cleaning. (if required)
- Some laws and regulations. (if required)
