Before the day raves of 2024 made a generation of hip (aching) clubbing elders happy, there was Sunday Sundae. A gay tea dance that delivered Sunday afternoons more special than an iced bun and a hot brew at your nans, Sunday Sundae was the home of right proper deep New York house and US garage, when the BPMs were as engaging as your Nokia ringtone and eye candy vested interests ensured it was the place to be each and every weekend. All done and dusted by 11pm. Giving the house heads of the LGBTQIA+ community space since 1999, Sunday Sundae was the home of trolly dollies and after-party darlings, local characters and scene legends, Real Brighton poses and grand entrances, “we could be anywhere” grins, dance-through-it moments and hugs so intense a rib was occasionally cracked. The one-stop destination for any soul intent on sleeping in throughout Monday, early doors hedonism bar none, it made Bar Centro then Escape Club aka Audio aka Patterns (and a brief Terraces detour) its home, forever bringing the class to a queer scene in need of sound ventures and quality DJs. Never a night to rely on the formulaic commercial banger but always the space to find the grooves that made queer nightlife so unique, Sunday Sundae stood nodding head and dancing shoulders above the competition, always ensuring space was given to the fierce house music divas that so eloquently captured the lives of our LGBTQI+ community, our heartaches, our determination, and our utter fabulousness darlings!
Sunday Sundae brought me my DJ heroes Craig Woodrow, Pete Hayward, Dulcie Danger, Richard Jones, DJ Hollie, Mikalis, Queen Josephine and Diablo and their tunes, generosity and lessons taught lead the way for this soul to connect with my city’s most loving of clubbing spaces – opening a doorway to a DJ residency at 10 Marine Parade I will forever cherish. Add a long list of memorable guest DJs, Jeffery Hinton, Paul Heron, Maze & Masters, Sami Kubu, Fat Tony, Guy Williams, Dave Kendrick, Jon Byrne, Freddie Thomas, Affy Go Bang, Jonny M, Prok|Fitch, King K, Oxylion & Danger, Freddie Dimanche, Femi B, Gonzalo, David Jimenez, Suze Rosser, Brian Cheetham, Rob Richards, Mikee Hollywood, Fergus, David Godding, those roadblock Pride Reunion parties we’ll always grin about, and Hayward designed flyer artwork so hot one could write a dissertation about them (oh hang on I did), and you have the secret to decades of that Sunday Sundae dancefloor devotion so many share. Devotion that kept us coming back for more week after week, year after year, reunion after reunion. Hands in the air, arms around each other, hearts forever full. We ?? Sunday Sundae. Always.
