The Sunday Spotlight

The Sunday Spotlight

Welcome to week two of the holiday edition. A sixty second read this time. Still keeping things short ??.

3 things. A learning, a win and a thank you.

Let's see where this takes us....

A lesson. ??

I read the marketing classic “Positioning” by Al Ries and Jack Trout on the beach this week.

To be honest it’s a bit dated.?

They talk about the dawning age of satellite TV and stress how overwhelmed human beings are by the volume of print, radio and TV advertising in 1980. I’m pretty sure the concepts of the internet, social media and the Tiktok generation would blow their minds!

However there are some simple and powerful ideas hidden within the pages.?

This one (which is applicable to all communication situations) resonated a lot:

“You have to sharpen your message to cut into the mind. You have to jettison the ambiguities, simplify the message and then simplify some more if you want to make a long-lasting impression.”

Work to do. A timely lesson.

A win. ??

I got my daughter Nell out of her rubber ring and onto a paddle board for the first time this week

In a former life I was a paddlesports instructor on the Thames, teaching kids to canoe and kayak at Westminster Boating Base in central London.

About 45 minutes into our session Nell turned to me with a big grin and a slight look of surprise on her face. “You’re a pretty good teacher Dad!” she exclaimed.?

I’ll take that! A definite win.

A thank you. ??

On Wednesday we spent? a lazy afternoon at the Chateau L’inclassable vineyard. It’s a tiny organic producer of a very smooth and enjoyable Medoc red. They’ve been making wine here for six generations.?

The main thing that struck me - apart from the fantastic tasting rouge - was the family’s story and their passion for producing their product in an organic and sustainable way.?

There are easy ways to do things. But that doesn’t mean they’re always better.?

Thank you to the Fauchey family for sharing your passion. I’m looking forward to seeing how your delicious wines mature over the coming years.
