The Sunday Spotlight

The Sunday Spotlight

A 3 minute read.

3 things. A learning, a win and a thank you.

Let's see where this takes us....

A lesson. ??

What if great storytelling was simpler than we thought? As part of my book research I’ve spent a lot of time over the last week thinking about what makes great stories great. Trying to understand why some tales move us and others leave us feeling flat. In the end I think it boils down to one word.

Transformation.

The narratives that stick with us, the ones we want to share with others, the ones that make our hearts soar or shake us to our core, are almost always a journey between two opposites.

Of course there can be exceptions. But when you scratch beneath the surface how often do you find the pattern?

From BAD to GOOD (A Christmas Carol)

From LOST to FOUND (It’s A Wonderful Life)

From FAILURE to SUCCESS (Cool Runnings)

From CONFUSION to CLARITY (The Matrix)

Often we know where we want our story to end. The trick is finding the right beginning. An opening that is far enough from the conclusion to create the tension and catharsis that audiences unconsciously crave. If your narrative isn’t landing chances are the arc of transformation isn’t pronounced enough. Turn up the contrast and things will normally fall into place.

A useful lesson.

A win. ??

My win is easy this week. By midday today we will have started our family summer holiday. Three weeks on the Atlantic coast of France, 45 minutes south-west of Bordeaux. Me, Laura, Nell and Brae (our crazy Golden Retriever). Nothing to do except soaking up the sun, eating great food and drinking a glass (or two) of fabulous local wine.

Hard work deserves hard rest. No one can keep going without recharging. Trust me I’ve tried!

So the out-of-office will be going on, the phone will be put on silent and the most important decision I plan to make is where to hang my hammock.

As a result there may or may not be a Sunday Spotlight for the next couple of weeks. It really depends on whether the mood takes me!

Switching off is a definite win.

A thank you. ??

II recently bought a new camera to improve the quality of my video content (if you’re interested it’s a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 - it’s AMAZING!!). Like so many pieces of tech, the functionality can be a little overwhelming so before I started to pull my hair out trying to work out what all the buttons did, I ventured over to YouTube to see if anyone could help.

Mind. Blown.

I thought I might find a couple of videos. There were thousands and thousands! My top pick was the beginners guide from Jeven Dovey.

Jeven has over 1 million subscribers. Mind blown again!

He teaches people how to vlog and use drones and over 1 million people are interested enough to sign up to his channel. He gives loads away for free and then has advanced stuff you can pay for too. It’s a brilliant business model. Once someone’s given you hours of quality content for nothing you don’t mind spending a few dollars to get a little bit more.

It’s made me really realise the power of YouTube to connect with your tribe and provide value. I need to be more consistent. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 should help.

If you’re not subscribed to my YouTube channel yet make sure you head over and sign yourself up. Expect lots of fun and interesting stuff when I’m back from my holidays!

Thank you Jeven and thank you YouTube.

If you've enjoyed my musings why not get The Sunday Spotlight in your email inbox each week rather than hoping LinkedIn shows it on your feed. Just click HERE to sign up.

I hope this was useful in some way.

I may be here next Sunday, if not I'll see you when I'm back.

Enjoy the week ahead.

Nice! Yeah transformation's undoubtedly where it's at. Great to keep it simple where necessary, but really dig in to find the good stuff. I think of it in 6 parts: Where someone begins, and everything is awful (Nightmare State). What they need to realise/learn in order to have a hope of escaping (Mindset-shifter). What they need to DO to take the first step (Essential Action). What the initial aspects of the transformation will be (Breakthrough Moment). What potentially overwhelming new way of doing things emerges as a result (New Frontier). How they eventually end up once they learn to thrive in that world (Altered State). Each one breaks down into a great individual story to tell!

You bought it!! Glad to see it in the hands! Jeven’s stuff is amazing but can also recommend UK YouTuber Tamara Gabriel who films nearly all her content on the OM Pocket 3.
