Sunday Shuffle v. 13

OpenAI DevDay | Custom GPTs | Personal AI Agents | 2023 SaaS Benchmarks | 2024 Predictions | AI + Healthcare

Happy Sunday, Shufflers! This past week was a whirlwind in the AI tech arena. OpenAI (makers of ChatGPT) hosted their inaugural DevDay in San Francisco, which stirred a mix of intense enthusiasm and heightened concerns about the integration of this new technology into businesses. It also pulled back the cover on the potential of AI and how it will have profound impact on brands and the marketer's role as we go into 2024.

The spotlight wasn't only on OpenAI. Elon Musk revealed his AI chatbot, "Grok," adding a unique twist to AI conversations. Meanwhile, startup Humane AI, created by ex-Apple innovators, launched their much-awaited AI device.

So, you may be wondering ... what's up with the puppeteer and his lookalike little partner? Let's Shuffle into it.

Inside this week's Shuffle:

  • OpenAI Dev Day Debrief
  • Wearable AI
  • Latest Research Reports
  • Prediction Season
  • Marketers Toolkit
  • AI + Healthcare

OpenAI DevDay Signals a New Era of Business Computing

Sam Altman & Satya Nadella (CEO MSFT) on stage at OpenAI DevDay

Sam Altman (CEO, OpenAI) announced a ton of new stuff in his keynote address at their first DevDay last week, much of which (not surprisingly) was targeted to developers. Some of the more noteworthy announcements were:

  • GPT-4 Turbo: An improved and more affordable version of ChatGPT 4 that can process prompts as long as entire books.
  • Custom GPTs: Gives users the ability to create specialized versions of ChatGPT for specific topics and tasks without coding.
  • AI Assistant API: Allows users to build AI assistants within their own apps.
  • GPT Marketplace: A marketplace where users can sell their Custom GPTs.
  • Rev Share: Gives users the ability make money from their apps.

Why It Matters: These announcements lay the foundation for how AI will quickly evolve from a novel "consumer-like" experience to a more business-ready platform. Some even say it signals the beginning of the end for how we will leverage tech in our lives going forward, specifically how we use computers, devices and the standalone apps that run on them. Natural language is quickly becoming the operating system of the future, allowing us to have our very own personal agents ("Mini Me's" in a sense) to do tasks for us.

Sound like a futuristic pipe dream? Yes, probably. But these tools already exist and marketers bear a responsibility for testing, understanding and applying them to our workflows and campaigns -- especially as consumers expect to have more personal, intelligent and immersive "conversations" with our brands.

Screenless "Pin" Let's You Wear & Chat with AI

Humane AI, the stealthy start-up founded by two former Apple employees, finally announced the first artificial intelligence device that some say could upend the computer and smartphone industry, or just be another log on the pile of failed wearable devices.? If you have 700 bucks lying around, you can order your own this week (see video).

Why it Matters: While it's unclear whether this AI pin gets traction or not, it does illustrate the power and ease by which we will be able to access AI through a screenless wearable device, without the need for a computer, smartphone or other tethered device.

New Research Reports:

  • 2023 SaaS Benchmarks Report: OpenView partners recently released this timely report, chock full of new insights like: ARR/FTE as the new growth north star, monetizing AI, new pricing models, and expansion as the new “acquisition.”
  • 2023 Consumer Spending Report: Klaviyo recently unveiled this comprehensive analysis that talks about how consumers are adjusting spending habits amidst a tough economy.
  • B2B Content Marketing Outlook: The Content Marketing Institute just dropped this report that includes useful insights, trends, challenges, and priorities for content marketing in the age of AI.

Get Out Your Crystal Ball - It's Prediction Season!

As we near the end of a remarkable year, many are already busy making predictions for next year.

  • Forrester's 2024 Predictions Report warns marketers to be very aware of the line between real and fake, urging companies to double down on marketing aligned to tier-one media and ensure that they are seen as reliable and trusted sources for journalists, buyers, investors, and other critical audiences. (see pg. 15)
  • Social Media Today gives their 34 predictions for social media in 2024.
  • Jessica Marie of Omnia says 2024 will be the year of authenticity. See her piece in Forbes for how marketers need to get back to the basics.
  • Much of 2024 will be shaped by our next Presidential Election and its impact on the economy, but J.P.Morgan says elections have historically had little impact on markets.

That AI Pin though. Gives new meaning to talking to yourself. It reminds me of back in the day when we had phones v cameras and of course the phone won. But will people actually give up their phones ? It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Thanks as always for sharing Jim!
