“Skateboarding teaches you how to take a fall properly." - Bam Margera
I grew up skateboarding. I had a quarter-pipe in the back yard where most summer nights you could find me falling off my Vision Shredder. It taught me how to fall over and over until I got it right. Marketing these days feels a lot like the skate culture. In these early days of Gen AI, many of us are trying out new things, teaching each either other our latest tricks, and falling a lot along the way, but we keep helping each other up and get back on that board.
Jerry sums it up well with Chris Rock in Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
As we all adapt to this "new normal" we're all taking our fair share of tumbles. And let me tell you, there were some epic tumbles this past week in tech. As Jerry says, "How many times will we have to get it wrong before we get it right?"
Let's shuffle up to the top of that quarter pipe and drop in.
Inside this week's Shuffle:
OpenAI Does a "Fakie" With Latest Launch DALL-E 3, It's Most Advanced Image Generator
In skateboard lingo, a "fakie" is essentially when you go backwards in your forward stance. This picture (thankfully not real!) symbolizes how we're starting to go backwards with these AI systems and just how susceptible they are to human manipulation and misuse.
OpenAI (maker of ChatGPT) just announced DALL-E 3, their latest AI-powered image generator, which can create unique images and be iterated upon inside the chat conversation. They also claim the tool uses a "multi-tiered safety system to limit its ability to generate potentially harmful imagery." Well, Peter Gostev was able to trick it with some deft prompt engineering to create an image of two kids enjoying a smoke together <Read More>.
Why Does It Matter: OpenAI has been trying to position itself as more brand-friendly and enterprise-ready vs. other options like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, but they still seem to be throwing stuff out there that is still vulnerable to misuse. In a follow up post on LinkedIn, Peter used DALL-E 3 to create images of famous celebs working the counter at McDonalds! ??
The Takeaway: As "deepfakes" get more and more sophisticated, we all have to have our guard up and question their authenticity. Especially with 380 days to the next Presidential Election!

YouTube Wants to Improve How We Get News From Authoritative Sources
Following up on my newsletter from last week that dove into this rising tsunami of misinformation on social media, YouTube announced on its blog last week that it will slowly roll out an immersive, multi-format news watching experience news that will allow viewers to find relevant long-form video, live coverage, and Shorts to quickly catch up on the latest news.? They claim that all news will come from “authoritative sources”, but it’s still unclear what they mean by that.? [More]
"Now more than ever, we remain committed to connecting people to high-quality information they can trust, particularly in times of elections, unrest, and natural disasters." - YouTube blog
Why it Matters:
Google owns YouTube, so one has to wonder how they will select the news and curate it for us users and how it stitches into their advertising engine.?
