Sunday Read: Can you fix a burnout?
We were always taught to dream big and chase those dreams.
It’s good to be ambitious and want to have it all. We were always taught to dream big and chase those dreams, no matter the cost. But if the price is your physical and mental health, it’s pretty expensive.?
Each generation's standard of living and need for quality life has become more demanding. Earlier, people were content with the basics, but today, we want more.??We desire quality work, extravagant lifestyles, expensive vacations, and work.?
And as we set out on this quest, we push ourselves, sometimes a little too much. And let’s face it, the pandemic blurred the line between work and home.?The result is burnout.
It is essential to snap out of burnout to be productive again.
It will further affect our efficiency, productivity, mental well-being, and happiness - if we keep going.?
Here’s how you can start to recover from burnout.?
Understand when you’re doing too much
It’s pretty standard for people not to realize when they have pushed themselves too much. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or an employee, keep track of how many hours you spend working in the day. You might be working from home, so you get carried away and don’t know when to hit that log-out button, but it’s essential to take a step back and end the workday consciously. This will help you gain a refreshed and rejuvenated mind the next day.?
Prioritize and Delegate
Much overworking occurs because your tasks aren’t prioritized. You jump from one job to the next and get overwhelmed when none seems complete. Make it a habit to plan your day every morning. Prioritize essential and urgent tasks first, after which you can tend to the other functions if you are in a leadership position and delegate tasks to your subordinates. Yes, you might feel that only you can do them well, but a good leader trains the team and allows them to take up key responsibilities.
Communication?
Talking always helps. People often suppress their feelings, struggles, and anxieties because they feel they will be judged or a burden if they open up to their family and friends. But guess what? There’s always someone willing to listen. Confide in a family member, friend, or colleague about the overwhelming feeling you’re experiencing. Even if you don’t find an immediate solution, the fact that you have someone to share it with will be a significant weight off your shoulders.??
Learn, adapt and grow
The corporate world has witnessed a series of changes during the pandemic, and the hybrid work model is here to stay. It’s essential to adapt to these changes to run the business smoothly. Many business processes have been rendered redundant, and new procedures and policies have come into the limelight. Be willing to learn about these changes and adapt to them. Whether you’re an employee or a business owner, adapting to change will provide clarity and lead to growth.?
Self-love?
Finally, learn to be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can, and it’s enough. Take a break from time to time to collect your thoughts and revisit the interests that make you happy. It could be a day at the spa, time with your kids, cooking your favorite meal, etc. The best way to overcome burnout is to take time and heal your mind and body.
