A Sunday in Kolhapur: Lessons in Opportunity and Resilience
This weekend, I took a family trip to Kolhapur and had a memorable experience that left me inspired. While the plan was to start the day with a visit to the iconic Mahalaxmi Temple, an unexpected challenge greeted us—our car’s back tire had a puncture.
After dropping my family at the temple, I set out in search of a puncture repair shop. To my surprise, all the local shops were closed, it being a Sunday. Frustrated but hopeful, I stopped at a small grocery store and asked the shopkeeper for help. The kind uncle explained that a repairman usually worked nearby but might not be available because of the day.
Then came a typical example of the warmth and helpfulness that Kolhapur is known for. The shopkeeper called someone and assured me that a repairman would arrive soon.
The Mobile Repairman
True to his word, within 20 minutes, a young man in his early 30s arrived on a bike, fully equipped with his tools. He quickly got to work, connecting a compressor to my car battery to refill the tire. Using soap water from a simple bottle, he located the puncture and fixed it within minutes using a puncture strip.
While he worked, his phone kept buzzing with calls—three in just the short span of our interaction. Curious, I asked him about his work. He shared that he handles 20+ calls a day, all on his bike, fixing flat tires across Kolhapur.
A Business Model Worth Applauding
Here’s the interesting part: his total investment for the business was minimal—a compressor costing around ?2,000 and a puncture kit worth ?500. Yet, by sheer skill, commitment, and efficiency, he earns approximately ?1,50,000 a month.
This experience left me amazed. In a country like India, where opportunities are abundant but often hidden in plain sight, people like this repairman remind us of the incredible potential that comes from determination and resourcefulness.

Lessons Learned
This encounter reinforced a few key takeaways:
1. Opportunities are Everywhere: With the right attitude and commitment, even the simplest of ideas can become a sustainable livelihood.
2. Resilience Pays Off: Challenges, like a puncture on a Sunday, can turn into stories of inspiration if tackled with the right mindset.
3. Service Matters: The repairman’s prompt response and efficient service exemplify how customer satisfaction can drive success.
This simple yet profound experience taught me that success doesn’t always require large investments or complex strategies. Sometimes, all it takes is intention, effort, and the ability to see potential in everyday problems.
As I drove back from Kolhapur, I couldn’t help but marvel at the enterprising spirit that thrives in our country.
