It’s a few minutes past nine on a sombre Sunday morning as I wake up and take the streets for the obligatory dog run. The local flora of the?island has sparked Mylo exciting interest?so it goes without saying that coffee is a must - this is going to be a long one.
In front me a lady in spandex orders her iced latte asking for the range of milk the shop carries. The barrista unassumed but equally indomitable turns to her with a simple “just plain milk dear”. And it’s in that very moment that I get to think about all the paraphernalia such locals tend to witness around these days. Around Easter and any other long weekend during which city buffs flock their slow-paced streets and in a sort of a barbarian act they occupy every inch of these remote, sacred places.
April has always been a month of travel and rightfully so. Nature calls for rebirth and alongside it, we find ourselves yearning for more of what is out there. Yes, this also includes a touristy Holy Saturday morning sitting on a balcony above Liston in Corfu watching pots getting smashed. Or gazing thousands of tin lanterns that light?up the castle at Pyrgos in Santorini on Good Friday. And the sound of any Philharmonic band that puts on a costume and a show?these days, solemnly walking around the piazzas of small towns and cities in the countryside.
So as you take on a morning stroll, a jolty run or just a sip of coffee under the Grecian sun, be thankful once more for the countless spots this country offers. Set aside any strong cravings for your normal routine (or type of milk for that matter) and enjoy the break from it.
