Part 1 : Always dress for success.
I’ve been thinking a lot to write about my recent technical skill upgrade. Not that I am not upgrading myself enough in cloud computing technologies , but just that I find some or the other reason to bypass it and postpone publishing my articles to next week . But I have this urge to write something. And so what if I don't post enough on LinkedIn to showcase my recent skill upgrades.
Sometimes , change and lazing around can be ground breaking. Do you agree?
So let's come to the point, If you haven’t seen the show Suits, here’s a brief abstract: a pleasant, successful and extremely intelligent lawyer named Harvey Specter hires Mike Ross, an upstart with a groundbreaking and commendable memory, to be his new associate. Mike never went to any law school, forget alone Harvard Law school. Now this is a problem, because this law firm only hires from Havard.
Even if you’re not a fan of legal dramas, the show does offer some valuable lessons for career development and office politics survival.
I recently started watching Suits. My first question was- Is Being a Lawyer anywhere close to the one being portrayed in the TV Show? Wow - because these are men in $5000 suits, glass polished shoes and vocabulary like Shakespeare . These are men of substance. I am not sure if it's safe to say that Suits portrayal of the legal world is absolutely accurate.
But hey, I am here to tell you how this show moved me. This show is epic because we are given a look at the personal lives of the characters. The managing and senior partners return to their super luxurious apartments; it is safe to say that lawyers who work at large, well-known firms are certainly well-paid. But this does not come without a lot of hard work. There are often scenes where the characters have been working in the office until late- sometimes they are wearing the same suit for consecutive days. The viewers are being told that work as a lawyer is difficult and that a level of dedication is necessary to secure a senior position.
How many of us have gone to that extent of work for prolonged periods of our lives?
It is inevitable that there definitely exists internal politics. This adds more drama into the series, whilst also being true to life. But how many of us try to make tequila out of the lemon that life throws at us?
Life is hard and it's very easy to sit back on the sofa and blame everything on Karma. But being able to work hardest in the toughest time is what Harvey’s character is all about. Also being able to consult with someone who has been there before can be really beneficial. So, don’t be shy. Just put on your best suit and drive your own luck!
This is a part of a small blog series that I will be writing as I go along with Suits. Let me know your thoughts.
I help your Career grow ??
4 年They literally ended the whole firm. ?? But it's one of those fun series which keeps you on your toes. Not really a show to pick up career lessons from though.
