As we move into the holiday season, hopefully you’ll have some down time from all the hustle and bustle, so I thought it would be appropriate to share a movie recommendation with all of you. The movie hits me really close to home, slinging me backwards right into my childhood.?
The film I’m recommending is ‘CODA’ is a heartwarming family drama that depicts a teenage girl as the only hearing member of her Deaf family. It is also a Sundance Film Festival winner! You can find the movie streaming on Apple TV+.?
Some of you may or may not know that I’m a CODA, what the heck is a CODA!?! Many of you may be asking. CODA is an acronym that stands for Child of Deaf Adult. My mother is Deaf, I learned ASL (American Sign Language) before I learned how to speak. My mom was the only Deaf member of our family. So the opposite of the film’s setting.?
The Deaf characters are all played by Deaf actors which is amazing because their communication was totally accurate. You may notice heightened non-verbal expressions when they sign, that is all part of the ASL language. ASL uses facial expressions, body language and it even has?it’s own grammar structure. ?
There were so many aspects of the movie that felt like my life...loud dishes clanking when eating...interpreting for my mom when she would interact with hearing people...I felt like I was 10 years old again. ?
The crazy thing is I was chatting with my husband recently telling him I don’t feel like I was raised in a home with another language, let alone another culture. I don’t feel like I’m part of two cultures, “hearing” and “Deaf” but the reality is I am. It’s completely second nature for me.?

The reason I feel this way is because in reality it ?is all I’ve ever known, that is my normal. ?
Definitely worth watching to gain a new perspective of another culture and it’s heartwarming?entertainment. You’ll get a sense of the Deaf culture I was raised in. If you watch it, let me know what you think. Go pop some popcorn and enjoy!?
Happy Holidays to all!?
