14?Jan each we celebrate Makar Sankranti. where the rest of festivals are not on fix date. do you know why? Why is Makar Sankranti auspicious? The rest of seasons are based on moon position. while the Makar Sankranti is based on sun position.
The Sun is on a downward journey from July to December. and this downward journey changes to upward journey or northward movement ( Uttarayan phase ).
Uttara means northward & aayana means movement in Sanskrit. From 14th Jan, this phase is a reversal from southward movement to northward movement of the sun is called “Uttarayan” ( We are located in the northern hemisphere).
After 14 Jan the sun enters the next zodiac phases i.e Makar (zodiac sign) (Capricorn zodiac sign ). Sankrant (movement) witnessing an increase in sunlight. or longer days the sun movement up word towards the north. (we are located in Northern Hemisphere). the sun-rays are also moves to become perpendicular to the earth.giving maximum energy to us.
Makar which is the first among the series of phases witnessing an upward journey. Hence the Makara phase holds such great significance in astronomy / ancient philosophy. because it represents the revival of sunlight & energy.
The auspicious day of Makar Sankranti marks the beginning of warmer and longer days. as compared to nights or the previous days.
