Summit on Tour in Warsaw: Day 2
游戏产业法律峰会 (Games Industry Law Summit)
A collaborative community of games industry's top legal professionals from 56 countries, powered by two annual events.
The second day of the conference is now over, with 32 speakers on 7 panels – delivering another 7 hours of content (not to mention the secrets delivered in confidence over the drinks afterwards).
Similar to any professional event, the Summit combines both the networking and the learning experiences. And it's as expected that on the second day, some of the attendees are more often geo-located closer to the coffee stand than to their seats in the presentation tent... And yet in Warsaw, we've observed a record attendance level at all times: yet another proof that the Polish games industry, including its legal counsels, is very competitive – and loves to learn!
The day opened with the panel that's a proof of our industry's maturity: BECOMING DISPUTE-READY, the exploration of the policies that can prevent the litigation that can be avoided; prepare for litigation that's unavoidable; and manage the litigation that's already on-going.
???? Philipp Behrendt ( Taylor Wessing Germany ) and ???? Theresa Bowman ( Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP ) spoke about this from the US and the EU perspectives (with the EU situation getting closer to what's already in the US; if you'd like to learn more on this, see Philipp's interview earlier in the month – Preparing for litigation in the games industry).
The second panel of the day was the record-setting LEGAL DASHBOARD, chaired by the one and only ???? Paul Gardner ( Wiggin ):
Paul orchestrated the updates from 12 countries, with these experts –
???? Isabel Davies ( Wiggin )
???? Konstantin (Konni) Ewald ( Osborne Clarke )
???? Andrea Dufaure & Alexandre Rudoni ( A&O Shearman France )
???? Luca Guidobaldi ( ADVANT Nctm )
???? Marie Keup (Taylor Wessing)
???? Erik Steiner ( Taylor Wessing ?sterreich )
???? Wojciech Fryze ( Olesiński i Wspólnicy )
???? Ryan Black ( DLA Piper )
???? Arata Nomoto ( City-Yuwa Partners )
???? Chao Yu ( Pillar Legal, P.C. )
Keeping up to date with the legal updates relevant to the games industry internationally is a big part of the in-house legal teams.
As Paul thought the panel is still not broad enough, he asked help from Luc Delany ( Mobile Games Intelligence ) to also report a little on ???? Australia:
We then made a break for lunch (by which time the weather felt more like Cyprus than Poland – probably because just about then, we announced Summit on Tour II that will run on April 17-19, 2024 in ???? Limassol; we also invited the community to join ???? Matthew Datum at the next Video Game Law Conference Tokyo that he organises on November 1-2, 2023 in ???? Tokyo!).
The next block covered two evergreen topics, starting with ADVERTISING – presented by the legal writer and industry legend ???? Sean F. Kane ( Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz ) and industry expert ???? Sarah MacDonald ( Wiggin ).
We then continued with an overview of INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY in relation to video games, delivered by ???? Sara Ashby ( Wiggin ), ???? Frances Jensen ( Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz ) and ???? Monika Gebel ( People Can Fly Studio ):
Following the tea and coffee break, we arrived at the section dedicated to the special expertise. ???? Alexander Ross ( Wiggin ) spoke about the unique aspects of using MUSIC IN GAMES, a fascinating area that we discussed before at the Summit in Vilnius – and that doesn't get easier. Joining Alexander were ???? Karol Laskowski LL.M. ( Dentons w Polsce ) and ???? Marc Mayer ( Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP ).
The next panel, dealing with the risks and benefits of using OPEN SOURCE IN GAMES, was lead by ???? Carsten Schulz ( Taylor Wessing Germany ), an expert in the field, with ???? Anastasiia (Stacey) Chuvaieva ( Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP ) – and a very special guest who landed on a flight from Nicosia unannounced,????? Darya Firsava ( Wargaming ).
We finished the day with a cross-country panel on the topic that's been on everyone's mind since the autumn of 2022: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE & GAMES (see, for example, "Artificial Intelligence & Games Industry", our interview with Luca Guidobaldi from April).
The panel was moderated by the ever-excellent ???? Peter Lewin ( Wiggin ), and featured the impeccably dressed ???? Mark Humphrey ( Lauren Zara Silberberg ), ???? Wojtek Ropel ( ADVANT Beiten ), ???? Chao Yu ( Pillar Legal, P.C. ), ???? Kuba Jankowski ( CD PROJEKT RED ) and ???? Artur Rudstein ( Wargaming ).
And with that, the conference was over!
We thank everyone who worked hard to make it happen:
?? The community board that iterated the program.
?? The presenters who shared expertise in a collaborative environment.
?? The sponsoring firms that allowed us to deliver the quality.
?? And of course, all the participants who made it such a warm-hearted event!
We also thank the management of the restaurant, the whole logistics team, and the team working on the accounting and design. And of course, this event's program director Katya Nemova , who made the conference flow smoothly!
We now take a break to pack, drive home and catch some sleep, and we'll return with the full event gallery (thanks to our long-time photographer Simas Bernotas ) next week, through the long-form newsletter.
Thanks, ???? Warsaw 2023!
Now onwards to ???? Vilnius 2023, and then ???? Limassol 2024!

Thank you to all organizers and participants- these two days were incredibly rich in building connections and gaining more specialized knowledge at what we are all interested and passionate about. We also appreciate the venue and of course great photos from the event. Till the next one! ??
