We champion restaurants to thrive in a digital world
It has been a busy start to the year. In this edition you will find:
BIG NEWS! Everything we’ve been working on is starting to produce results. There are lawsuits flying and new legislation pending holding big third-party online order and delivery apps accountable. We’re leveling the playing field to create a more fair and sustainable delivery ecosystem. The DRA is working on statewide efforts across the country to protect the restaurant community’s ability to survive and thrive. Here are highlights from the news and our efforts:
I’d also like to thank the Los Angeles chapter of the California Restaurant Association for having me speak at their latest Leadership Roundtable on “How to Optimize Online Visibility.” It was great to connect with their members and discuss not only the latest technology the industry has to offer, but also the latest ways they can get involved in creating a more fair and sustainable restaurant technology ecosystem. Special thanks to Selwyn Yosslowitz and his delicious restaurant, Marmalade Cafe, for hosting us.
Now is the time for you to get involved in the effort to preserve the culinary diversity and economic vitality of the restaurant industry. Please reach out to me and I’d be happy to talk about ways you can lend your voice.
Warmest Regards,
Joe Reinstein
Executive Director

Legislative Update
Check out the latest legislative efforts from across the country that address delivery fee caps, limiting service fees and regulating big third party delivery.
Florida:
The state legislature introduced HB1099 and SB676, which claim to establish much-needed pro-restaurant protections in Florida, but lack the protections that would solve the problems caused by online delivery platforms, like eliminating hidden fees imposed on restaurants and requiring basic customer and order information sharing. We’re working on a campaign to ensure these bills do not pass and give food delivery platforms even more power over restaurants. Read Joe’s OpEd in FloridaPolitics. Visit SaveFLRestaurants.com to urge Florida legislators to vote No on HB1099 and SB676.
Grubhub Sued by LA County:
On February 21, 2024, Los Angeles County filed a lawsuit against Grubhub alleging “false and deceptive advertising, misrepresentation and unfair business practices that financially harm consumers, delivery drivers and restaurants.” The DRA commends Los Angeles County for taking the necessary action to hold third-party delivery platforms accountable for unfair and deceptive business practices, especially deceptive and excessive fees charged to consumers and restaurants. Read our full statement.
California:
Senator Durazo (D-SD26) has committed to authoring pro-restaurant legislation and has introduced a spot bill, SB1490, while the Senator’s office and community stakeholders finalize the language. We expect to have the amendment introduced within the next two weeks. Click here to email Senator Durazo a thank you note for supporting local restaurants.

Quote
“One of the most important findings of this report is a fruition of years of development of generational differences in expectations and utilization of restaurant technology. It’s extremely important for operators to know their demographics and align their technology with that customer base, because for the younger consumer, the expectation now is that some aspect of the experience incorporates technology.”
