Summertime Spyness
In honour of the Summer Unity activities happening at the office over the summer, I can’t help but wonder what sort of spy I’d be. Could I manage an Ethan Hunt’s physicality and seeming ability to not age? What about an alcohol-dense James Bond? Maybe somewhere in the middle, with a Jason Bourne sort of vibe?
Nah. If I’m lucky, I’d be Sherlock Holmes. He’s not a spy, but he’s darn good at a lot of activities involved, and I’d keep what dignity I have left.
Realistically, I’d be Johnny English – a bumbling fool who somehow manages to do the job. Cause I’m definitely not (nor do I want to be, really… an Austin Powers.
Although in honesty, my knowledge of spies, fictional or otherwise is pretty much limited to Blockbuster (or childhood TV shows) movies and history, especially around the cold war. Not that it’s all bad.
Spies sound really cool in concept, too. Even in fantasy worlds where the most technology you’ve got is lockpicks. Stealthy, persuasive, tech savvy, often good looking. Who wouldn’t want all that? I like being persuasive and tech savvy, somehow manage to be stealthy, at least in my running shoes.
But I don’t know that, at least as is, I could do spy as a living. Giving up family and friends, life as I know it… Especially in service for something outdated like a nation.
What do you think, as we head into the weekend – could you be a real spy? Would you want to be?
