Summer is here, so let’s set the scene: the smell of barbecue is wafting through the air, flip-flops are your go-to footwear, and the beach is calling. Yet, in between beach reads and mowing the lawn, summer is also an excellent time to step out of your comfort zone and create some new habits.
Here are some ways to do that and, in turn, become a lifelong learner:?
Evolve: Be open to change. Get comfortable with the unknown. Breathe through discomfort. How? Begin a meditation practice with an app like Insight Timer . Take a solo walk in the woods and listen for the natural quiet in the stillness. Try journaling or perhaps pick up a paintbrush for the first time. ?
Explore: Stay curious and externally focused. Get out of your lane and look at the entire highway! How? Try a new fitness class in a different neighborhood. Go for an out-of-the-way hike. Take your first-ever dip in an alpine lake. ?
Ideate: Collaborate with others. Build in time to think big, think crazy. Reward the zaniest idea. How? Join a local bike club. Road, mountain, neighborhood cruise, you choose the gear and scenery. Set a summer reading challenge with a friend. Or start a rotating cooking club with a new group of friends. Experiment: Operate in short cycles. Make quick decisions and be okay with mistakes and what you learn from them. How? Try one new thing each week. Check out that independent bookstore you’ve heard about. Watch YouTube to learn how to wallpaper a tired bathroom. Ask a friend to teach you the art of fly-fishing.
