Tips from the team: How to ace an interview
This month, our volunteer, Hasan, shares some gems on the best ways to prepare for internship interviews!
Understand the Interview Format
Interviews come in various formats, from traditional one on one conversations to technical assessments or group activities. To best prepare for your interview, it is essential you are familiar with the format of the interview. If technical concepts are involved, review relevant materials and be ready to demonstrate your knowledge and problem solving abilities. Feeling confident in your grasp of core competencies prevents getting stumped on basic skills for the role.
Research the Company in Depth
Go beyond just scanning the company's website. Delve into their core values, mission, recent news, and achievements. This deep understanding will help you answer motivational questions more effectively and showcase your genuine interest in the organisation and its goals. Interviewers appreciate candidates who have truly researched the company, and this can really set you apart from the other candidates.

Practice Interviewing
Conduct mock interviews with friends, family members, or a career counsellor. This hands on practice allows you to refine responses, improve body language, and gain confidence. Seek feedback on areas needing improvement so you can address weaknesses before the actual interview. Getting comfortable answering common interview questions makes a significant positive difference.
Tap Your Network for Insights
Reach out to any contacts you may have at the company, whether former colleagues or connections on LinkedIn. Ask if they're willing to share insights about the interview process and culture. Their inside perspective can provide valuable tips to help you prepare more effectively.
Relax and Be Yourself
While thorough preparation is essential, don't let interview pressure make you appear overly rehearsed or robotic. Remember, you've already impressed the hiring team enough to earn this interview. Now is the time to let your authentic personality shine through. Maintain a positive, confident attitude, and showcase your unique traits and perspectives. A balance of polish and individuality can help you stand out.
By understanding the format, researching the company, practicing diligently, allowing your genuine self to come through, and tapping your network, you'll be equipped to handle the interview process successfully. Proper preparation increases your chances of leaving a lasting positive impression and securing your dream job.
