Summer'22 Internship Experience at Fujitsu Research of America
My first corporate work experience in the USA as a Marketing Intelligence Analyst Intern at Fujitsu Research of America (FRA) located in the heart of Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay Area was nothing less than a dream come true.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Fujitsu Limited is a Japanese multinational information and communications technology equipment and services corporation, established in 1935 and headquartered in Tokyo. Fujitsu is the world's sixth-largest IT services provider by annual revenue, and the largest in Japan, in 2021.
INTERNSHIP AT FUJITSU RESEARCH OF AMERICA
My internship experience was highly dynamic and provided me with ample learning opportunities to expand my skills and knowledge further. Working on-site allowed me to network, connect and interact with highly experienced professionals within the organization in America (directly) and across the globe (virtually). Throughout my internship, I was working under the guidance of Surya Josyula Sir and Yanfang " Elizabeth" Yu Ma'am and the respective technical leads, researchers, and the cross-functional team. I was fortunate enough to be part of a great team that was spread across the globe across different time zones, separated by distance and united by a common goal, the team always ensured that I felt comfortable and included.
The organizational management in Fujitsu was very efficient, we had weekly global meetings, regional meetings, and team meetings within the organization, which allowed me to interact, update and take advice from my mentors, technical leads, and my entire team quite easily and smoothly. During my internship, I had the opportunity to work and coordinate efficiently with the cross-functional teams not only in America but around the globe, in our weekly meetings we connected with the TSU Teams across the globe. Together we discussed and defined our weekly, monthly, and quarterly agendas, identified KPIs to improve data-driven decision-making, and shared and exchanged our weekly updates across the TSU teams in America (FRA), Japan (FRJ), and Europe (FRE). Since the departments were in different continents and time zones, it was an amazing experience for me to see how big organizations manage and organize meetings to efficiently coordinate together towards achieving a common goal.

CHALLENGES
The challenge of working in the Technology Strategy Unit was working around various New and Advanced Technologies every two weeks. The position demanded me to quickly learn and understand the technologies in detail around Quantum Computing, Advanced Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Wide Learning, and Graph AI Technology, to name a few, and to be able to promote and market these advanced technologies to the potential customers and retain their interest without diving deep into the technicalities. I had to analyze market trends and identify KPIs and industry-specific customer benefits to be able to promote and strategize the data sheets to market these products effectively to potential customers through simple yet effective demonstrations because the clients might have little or no knowledge of the development of the software involving complex research and technological details. From being involved in understanding the documentation to installing and testing the demos of the software to detailing the industry-specific customer benefits around each of the Advanced Technologies to identifying strategies for marketing and demonstrating various advanced technologies to potential customers, I have had a challenging yet wonderful learning experience.
My journey wouldn’t have been smooth without being mentored and trained by the respective technical leads, and without my manager’s constant support, who supported me with her valuable guidance and always ensured I was working in the right direction.?
The second most challenging aspect during my internship was communicating across teams, my work required me to work closely and efficiently across several teams and around the globe as well as working with various technical leads for each of the products. With the guidance of my manager, supervisors, mentors, and technical leads of the following technologies, I was able to detail a summary of the advanced technologies followed by identifying its key features and customer benefits to target potential customers. I was responsible to create interactive dashboards consisting of data visualization and infographics to make simple presentable data sheets conveying the vast amounts of information and complex workflow of this advanced software, making it easier for us to effectively market our products to prospective customers by providing the visitors with more readable and easily understandable information simplifying the complex mechanisms and workflows of these advanced technologies and software.
The internship allowed me to understand the critical focus areas involved in promoting and marketing products to improve the businesses, it helped me understand how to process the information that lies within vast amounts of data as a skilled analyst and how to fetch meaningful positive insights and outcomes. Activities such as data gathering and validation, building data models, and performing exploratory data analysis to extract meaningful business insights were among my day-to-day responsibilities. Throughout this internship, I enhanced my skills as a marketing intelligence analyst and became proficient in using tools like MS SQL, MS Excel, PowerBI, SapientML, Digital Annealer, etc. The opportunity I had of having a firsthand experience to witness and understand how process mining benefits different use cases for different industries was invaluable.
Apart from the technicalities of my work, I was involved in installing, testing, and demonstrating the demos to the visitors and industry professionals who visited Fujitsu in Sunnyvale, CA. With the support of my mentors, I successfully demonstrated live demos and presentations to our clients and visitors on several occasions.
EXPERIENCE
I had an amazing experience interning at Fujitsu Research of America. Even though I was initially assigned to work on-site, I appreciate the flexibility that I was offered throughout my internship at FRA which allowed me to operate in a Hybrid mode where I could work remotely as well as on-site as per convenience. Even though I was an intern, I was given enough opportunities to pitch my ideas as well as hone my skills.
Halfway through my internship, on June 17th, 2022, a group of 28 visitors (Product Managers and Directors from various industries) from Brazil were invited for an in-person tour of the Demo Center at FRA. The TSU team in FRA bestowed me with the responsibility to conduct their tour of the FRA Demo Center Area for our visitors. I presented them the live demos showcasing Fujitsu’s advanced capabilities and successfully promoted Fujitsu’s technological advancements marking the company’s significance and contributions to Research and Development in the Silicon Valley. As expected, we had amazing feedback from our visitors, they were fascinated and impressed to have experienced our live demonstrations of the advanced technologies. Thereafter, throughout my internship, I was always given the opportunity to interact and demonstrate these technologies installed in the demo center to our clients and visitors at FRA.
Apart from that, FRA had an interactive work culture and we had monthly programs and events within the organization, such as the “Lunch & Learn” event, which served as a platform to interact with the industry experts and network with the professionals within FRA. At the event, we had guest speakers and researchers sharing the latest knowledge of the best practices around the advanced technologies in and around the world, followed by a lunch gathering on our premises.
I feel honored to share that from being an attendee on the first “Lunch & Learn Event” to being a guest speaker at my last “Lunch and Learn” event at FRA, I had come a long way. On 28th June 2022, I was invited as one of the guest speakers for the event where I shared the platform with other professionals and researchers in Fujitsu. As an intern at Fujitsu, I was given an amazing platform and I had the opportunity to present my learning experience as a Marketing Intelligence Analyst intern and my journey in setting up the Demo Center area at FRA in front of the Fujitsu Team.
I am glad for this opportunity that enriched my technical knowledge and interpersonal skills. I would like to thank my mentors, my manager, my team and to everyone within the organization for guiding me and extending me their support throughout.
Remembering the roots, I would like to thank my college The?Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, and?The University of Texas at Dallas?where I learned about the verticals of life.?I am extremely grateful to, Prof.?Mark Thouin?for all your valuable advice and recommendations.
I am extremely grateful of my journey this summer where I had the opportunity to be a part of high-impact projects, full of new experiences, knowledge, skills, and adventures in Fujitsu?Research of America, Inc.
