Summer vacation
This year’s summer vacation plans haven’t quite turned out as many of us had expected or hoped for. Many of my clients have had reservations about traveling. For those travelling abroad, some countries are not even allowing foreigners to cross their borders. Other clients have health concerns and are not comfortable being around large groups of people. And I think most of us are feeling the crunch of increased prices this year with gas, hotels and restaurants being higher than usual. Living in the UK, I am accustomed to paying a higher cost for petrol, but I know that such exorbitant prices come as a big shock to many Americans and may even prohibit their travel, especially those who are traveling long distances in their cars.
However, all is not lost for those who still have holiday time in front of them or even those who want some holiday weekend ideas! It just calls for a rethinking of options. Firstly, we don’t have to go to a faraway destination to enjoy the summer. And secondly, it’s a good idea to enjoy the great outdoors while we can. For those who live in or near large metropolitan areas, there are often special summer events and activities scheduled, and many are often free. Even if you live in a smaller community, there are things that you can find to do right in your own “backyard.” Many communities have free outdoor summer concerts in the park, craft shows, and even historical locations that merit investigation. Of course, you definitely want to check schedules beforehand this year as it not a typical time.
You may need to think like a tourist and look for information at a local tourist bureau. Or stop by a local hotel to pick up those handy brochures that advertise nearby events and activities. Check the newspaper for special events, along with local publications that are often chock-full of things you can do solo, or with friends or family members.

Take advantage of local museums, and their summer programs, or consider a trip to a nearby zoo or aquarium. And don’t forget a local lake or beach area. A day near the water with a picnic basket, grill and/or cooler can make for a very relaxing and pleasant experience. Area parks may offer possibilities for biking, hiking, and even camping.
If you pick something different to do each day, you could quickly organize some fun-filled summer and/or vacation activities without having to go very far. And by staying close to home, you may find discover some amazing and surprising treasures within your own community.
Whatever you decide to do, I wish you a fun, relaxing and pleasant remainder of the summer!
