Summer of Success: Essential Skills ServiceNow Interns Acquired

Author: Connor Donovan

This summer, ServiceNow welcomed hundreds of interns from 10 countries into our global family. Each cohort quickly made a positive impact on our company, customers, and technology, learning from their incredibly bright mentors and buddies.

From week one, these interns developed and advanced a host of technical skills, ranging from writing code to interpreting data trends and more. After speaking with three interns across the finance, product, and marketing organizations at our Hudson Yards office in New York City, they credit their summer at ServiceNow for developing crucial power skills: adaptability, critical thinking, networking, and cross-functional collaboration. These are skills they anticipate will benefit them throughout their careers.

Check out how three months at ServiceNow contributed to these interns' growth.

The power of adaptability

The tech industry is constantly shifting, and ServiceNow is no stranger to change.

This summer, Kevin, an MBA intern in the finance organization, focused on strategic sourcing and assisted with bringing savings back to ServiceNow’s bottom line.

He appreciates the much-needed flexibility and high level of responsiveness required to negotiate contracts with both vendors and suppliers. In this work, he learned how to adapt to the changing needs of our partners to ensure a fair and beneficial contract.

Coming from a background in wealth and credit management, Kevin’s experience at ServiceNow broadened his career horizons. “ServiceNow has given me the opportunity to adapt to the quick and exciting movements of a growing company,” Kevin shares.

Cutting through the noise

Reframing the way she thinks has been essential to Hannah’s internship. After moving from the West Coast to NYC to experience a summer in the city, she took on the role of an inbound product management intern at ServiceNow, working with various products at the development stage. To ensure the success of a solution for talent acquisition professionals, Hannah needed to understand the daily challenges faced by recruiters.

“At first, it was challenging to alter the way I think about how customers can benefit from our technology,” shares Hannah. “After researching the industry and identifying customer pain points, building out useful software solutions for talent acquisition professionals started to flow naturally.”

Thinking through multiple angles became second nature to Hannah. Within a few weeks of her internship, she became an influential member of her team, ensuring the development and feasibility of effective software solutions.

The networking advantage

At orientation, the Early-in-Career team advised each cohort to leverage their status as interns to build relationships with employees.

Eden, a marketing intern, took this to heart and connected with a colleague who also attended Northeastern University. Through this interaction, Eden gained insights into her colleague’s career journey and aspirations, and how those could be applied to her own career path.

“My conversation with this colleague is just a small example of how ServiceNow’s culture emphasizes looking out for one another and winning as a team,” Eden shares. “The discussion inspired me to add a marketing analytics concentration to my degree as this individual shared with me how it has helped her in her post grad life.”

The unwavering support Eden has received from her team has positively shaped her career trajectory, guiding her toward new opportunities and growth. She recognized these valuable connections extend beyond this summer and will serve as a cornerstone throughout her professional journey.

Synergy in action

ServiceNow brings together 24,000+ employees from around the world who make up a wide range of teams and organizations.

During their internships, Hannah, Eden, and Kevin collaborated with individuals across various roles. Understanding how these individuals communicated and learning more about their unique responsibilities within the company provided them with valuable experience in enhancing cross-functional collaboration on a global scale.

Forming fast friendships, Eden, Hannah, and Kevin enjoy spending time at Hudson Yards’ Desco Lounge, savoring delicious snacks and occasional catered lunches together.

“Partnering closely with the legal team to ensure contract compliance has been incredibly rewarding,” Kevin notes. “Gaining insight into how another team operates and connecting with individuals across organizations is inspiring and has deepened my understanding of ServiceNow as a company.”

Stand out: winning tips for future interns and applicants

Landing an internship at ServiceNow and excelling in the role involves a few key steps that the interns agree on: immerse yourself in the culture, connect with others beyond your team, be proactive and engaged, and ask questions.

“My advice to applicants would be to research ServiceNow’s inclusive culture,” Eden recommends. “The people I’ve met this summer have been the highlight of my experience, and the company culture truly reflects those positive interactions.”

For incoming interns, Eden also advises getting to know your team and branching out. “Employees are happy to get to know interns,” she says. “The coffee chats I’ve set up have helped me understand the endless possibilities at ServiceNow and beyond.”

Hannah recommends new interns grasp their own roles and responsibilities and see how they fit into the team dynamics from the start. “ServiceNow values interns as if they are full-time employees,” she says. “Understanding your role from the beginning will set you up for success.”

Kevin encourages incoming interns to actively engage with their team. “Don’t be afraid to speak up and recommend creative solutions,” he shares. “Every team at ServiceNow values each member’s input.”

He advises applicants to begin developing and refining the relevant skills needed in their potential positions. “In an evolving work environment, applicants should identify and develop the skills and traits employers are looking for,” he says. “Coming into the interview process with an understanding of what to highlight about yourself can make a big difference.”

After 12 weeks, there’s no question: these interns learned a lot, laying a strong foundation for their future careers. We’re thrilled to witness the remarkable impact they will continue to make in the tech industry and beyond.
