Summer readings on R&I policy
To all friends and colleagues interested in research and innovation policy, I would like to suggest to you a couple of Summer readings from the recent publications of the economics team in Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission:
1.We have published just before the summer the 2020 edition of our biennial Science, Research and Innovation Performance (SRIP) report. If you don’t have much time, you can always read “Chapter 0” with an Executive Summary with 11 policy recommendations that support the people, planet and prosperity agenda or even watch online the launch event of the report, which attracted a lot of interest.
SRIP 2020 analyses how Europe performs in the global context in science, technology and innovation. It highlights the need for R&I to support the sustainable and inclusive growth of countries, regions and firms, making sure that no one is left behind in the quest for strengthening innovation systems.
You can also navigate through the highly visual communication products that we put forward to promote the #SRIPreport: a video with its main findings, an interactive version of the report, and three infographics highlighting the top 10 facts and figures and the importance of R&I as a driver for sustainable and competitive Europe.
2. We have also launched our new “Research and Innovation Paper Series”, which includes three types of papers: Working Papers, Policy Briefs and Literature Reviews. You may be interested in having a look at our two latest papers:
- Can R&I save the day? A fair green and digital recovery from COVID19: this new working paper discusses the role of R&I in the short-term context of the sanitary crisis and economic contraction, as well as in the longer term and aftermath of the crisis, as a key driver of the recovery.
- Aiming for more: R&D investment scenarios for the next decade: this new paper analyses four possible scenarios for R&D expenditures over the next decade and quantifies efforts from national governments and from the industry under these scenarios as well as the investment gap with respect to a 3% R&D intensity.
