Summer office fashion: what to wear

How to stay cool and chic in the office during Summer? Yes, it's possible with a little know how. In today’s article, I share the do's and don'ts of dressing for work on those hot days.

Invest in one or more dresses

When the temperature rises, dresses are a girl's best friend. But not all dresses are equal when it comes to dressing for the office:

  • Hemlines should be knee length, just above the knee or anywhere below. Mid-thigh or anything higher is a no-go zone for work.
  • Shift dresses (with or without sleeves) are one of the easiest and most versatile options.
  • If you want something with more drape and movement, opt for a wrap dress.

Choose fabrics for the season

Never, ever wear sheer or see-through fabrics to the office. Instead, opt for fluid, lightweight fabrics that breathe and will keep you cool, such as cotton, linen, bamboo, tencel and rayon. Blended synthetic fabrics (such as those made from cotton, polyester, nylon and rayon) also help to regulate heat.

Lighter coloured garments absorb less sunlight than dark colours and will minimize heat to keep you feeling cooler. Find items in your best lightest neutrals such as cream, white, light grey, sand, stone or pastels. Add coloured accessories or shoes for some playfulness.

Add a lightweight blazer or a wrap

Consider investing in a blazer in a lightweight fabric, such as linen, which can easily be worn over dresses or paired with skirts and pants, or add a lightweight wrap that complements your outfit. Wraps can also double as warmth layer in icy air conditioned offices.

 Mix it up

Summer generally brings about an injection of colour, prints and patterns, and office-appropriate attire can still be fun. Print skirts, brightly coloured dresses, culottes and smart jumpsuits can all be part of your summer work wardrobe.

 One final word…

You should not look like you are going to beach. That means flip flops, short shorts, singlets and tank tops are out.

Thanks for this great advice Lucy Owens. At the moment in Melbourne I’d like to know where the hot weather is? I’m trying to dress for three seasons in one week (or day)!
