Summer of My Dreams: Beauty’s in the Details for Our Operations Interns

by Cat Dugan, Communications Intern at Lower

Eight Operations Interns joined Lower at their New Albany Headquarters for the summer of 2022.

What does an Operations Intern do at Lower?

Throughout the summer, interns are matched with various teams as they complete this rotational program. They sift through files for accuracy, become a part of the home buyer’s success, gain exposure on communication strategy with customers and loan officers, shadow senior team members, share their accomplishments, and connect with other interns in their cohort. As they learn how to succeed in their roles, interns often find themselves independently completing the work of full-time operations team members. Still, each intern works with a supportive group as they hone their skills. Finally, in the last few weeks of their internship, interns work with each other in groups on a case study; their business solutions will be pitched in a presentation to senior leadership in the final week of their internship.

College students who are energetic, adaptable, detail-oriented, willing to jump into new challenges, and collaborative should apply. Of course, a functional knowledge of Microsoft is a must. In the interview, your hiring manager will ask questions to determine the following traits: attention to detail, effective communication, creative problem solving, and characteristics of Lower’s four core values.?

Learn how one rotation’s manager defines success.

Lauren Falk, Assistant Vice President of Heroes at Lower, provided insight into her intern evaluation. “While numbers are important in the mortgage industry, I do not solely look to an intern’s production to measure their success. High-value interns quickly take on new content and apply it to their work.?

She continues, “I analyze interns, asking myself, ‘How willing are they to ask questions and come up with potential solutions?’ ‘How quickly can they adapt to the ever-changing industry?’ ‘Do they form bonds with their team members, or does their involvement end with their work tasks?’”

Lower provides each Operations Intern with a professional mentor through their buddy system. Falk explains, saying, “Interns are paired with senior professional mentors to guide them through various work tasks and processes. Meanwhile, interns provide our full-time employees with new perspectives. Interns who latch onto opportunities to learn thrive here at Lower.”
