Summer Internship Program at Owlstone Medical.
At Owlstone Medical our internship program allows university students to gain valuable experience across our different teams. In this article, you can hear from some of our latest interns to find out what our program is like, and what they got up to at Owlstone Medical during their time with us. Amy interned in our clinical trials department, and Alex interned with our sales and marketing team.
Could you share some valuable experiences and insights you gained during your internship?
Amy: My internship allowed me to be part of a company that is highly active in scientific research, showing me the behind-the-scenes of the research papers that I was reading at university. I was included in many different projects and meetings to give me high exposure to different areas that contribute to the research and improvements of medical devices.? Being assigned my own study to run internally and helping with other external studies provided me with knowledge of clinical studies/trials regarding documentation, coordination, and the opportunity to get trained on different equipment.
Alex: I had some exciting opportunities during my internship, from helping to produce science writing and blog content, to attending an international scientific conference and discussing Owlstone's work with leading scientific experts, allowing me to gain many valuable insights into the inner workings of the scientific industry.
What support do interns have at Owlstone Medical?
Amy: We are assigned a supervisor, whom we worked closely with and could ask many questions to. My supervisor was great, she always included me in as much as possible and was always very helpful. We had 1:1s with our supervisors weekly, and interns are also part of a larger team who are all willing to help as much as they can.
Alex: Whilst I was getting to grips with everything in my first few weeks, the team was really helpful with helping me to settle in, and throughout my internship, I knew that there were always people available that I could ask for help!
How well did the internship align with your career goals and aspirations?
Amy: My internship led to me being welcomed back by Owlstone once I had graduated, achieving the role I interned for initially, allowing me to come back and develop my knowledge and skills further.

Alex: This internship helped me to gain a better understanding of what it’s like to have a career in this sector and inspired me to pursue this, whilst also gaining many important transferrable skills that would be useful in a wide range of careers.
What was the most rewarding thing about interning at Owlstone Medical?
Amy: I liked the large company meetings (not just because of the social afterward ??) but because it was nice to hear how everyone's work, including mine, fits into the bigger picture and goals of the company.
Alex: I think it's rewarding to know that you're actively contributing to the important overall mission at the heart of Owlstone; helping to advance early diagnosis techniques to save lives.
Would you recommend this internship program to other students?
Amy: 100%. The internship was a great way to set up career opportunities during my degree for when I graduate, and it made it so much easier to walk into a role before I had even graduated.
Alex: Definitely! Owlstone has been a brilliant place to work, both with the team creating such a positive working environment and the exciting work and opportunities that push you to advance your skill set.
