The Pilotage Act is Renewed

A new Pilotage Act in Finland will come into force on September 1st, 2023. The new Act will have a significant impact on pilotage in Finland and will affect pilotage examinations. According to the current legislation, the blind chart test, the written examination and the simulator test are provided by training providers approved by Traficom - Aboa Mare being one of them. However, according to 51 § of the new Act, all pilotage examinations will be conducted by specially trained individuals approved by Traficom. Therefore, instead of being provided by a training provider, the examinations will be administered by an individual.

Due to the new Pilotage Act, Aboa Mare will no longer offer pilotage examinations after August 31st, 2023. Until that date, we will continue to provide pilot examinations as usual.

For more information on the requirements starting from September 1st, 2023, please refer to Traficom.

Aboa Mare thanks all our pilotage examination clients for our years together and wishes you safe and enjoyable sailings.

Student Spotlight: Niclas Kallio ?

Niclas is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Maritime Management. He chose this path because he realized that a static office job wasn’t for him, and his fascination with ships, both big and small, led him to this exciting field of study. In the future, he wants to work as an officer on a cargo ship, and he hopes to find a solid balance between his career and private life filled with adventures. As long as he finds improvement and responsibility in a community where he feels comfortable, he is happy. Niclas has promised himself to stop sailing once it’s no longer fulfilling. In his free time, you can find him at the climbing gym.

One of Niclas’ favorite memories is when he participated in Pikkulaskiainen’s sled race last winter. “Our sled performed beautifully, and even if we didn’t take home the first prize, we slid into the hearts of many with our slightly undersized sled and great team spirit.”

Niclas has been acting as a friend tutor for the last school term and also as an elected board member in EN? since January. Although his tutor gig is over, he is still going to be guinding the new tutors in their job this fall. “And most importantly, I will do my best to make the new students feel at home. But before that, I can’t be reached on land!”

Do you have any advice for new students?

“Don’t be afraid to do onboard training. The first times are physically and mentally demanding, but once you find the tempo, you’re going to be collecting OBT-days like it’s nothing!

We’re proud to have Niclas as part of our student community. Keep navigating the seas of success, Niclas!
