Summer Adventures: Building Independence and Confidence

?

As July comes to a close, I hope you and your families are enjoying the summer and finding moments of joy amid the busyness. For many of us, summer is a time of both relaxation and preparation for the upcoming school year. As we continue to enjoy the sunny days of summer, it’s a great time to focus on building essential life skills with our kids. Learning doesn’t have to stop when school is out, and incorporating life skills into fun summer activities can make the process enjoyable for everyone. Whether you have younger children or teens preparing for college, here are some ideas to make learning life skills a part of your summer routine.

?

For Younger Kids

Younger children can benefit from learning basic life skills that will set the foundation for future independence. Here are a few ideas to make learning these skills fun:

  • Cooking Together: Turn meal prep into a fun family activity. Let your child help with age-appropriate tasks like washing vegetables, mixing ingredients, or setting the table.
  • Gardening: Involve your kids in planting and caring for a small garden. This will teach them responsibility as well as the importance of consistency.
  • Cleaning Games: Make tidying up a game. Use a timer and see who can clean up the fastest, or create a fun checklist for chores. Bins make all of our lives easier!

For Teens And Young Adults

For older kids and teens, summer is the perfect time to focus on more advanced life skills that will prepare them for adulthood and college life. Here’s how to make it engaging:

  • Budgeting with Real Money: Give your teen a budget for a specific project or outing and let them manage it. This teaches financial responsibility in a real-world context.
  • Self-Advocacy: One of the most essential skills your child needs is the ability to advocate for themselves. College students often need to request accommodations, negotiate with roommates, or speak up in class. Make sure your teens know how to ask for what they need.
  • Time Management: Use a fun project, like planning a family day trip, to teach planning and time management skills.
